The Anish Jacob Residence is a thoughtfully designed 3,300 sq. ft. single-storied home situated in a linear 23-cent plot in Erattupetta, Kottayam. With colonial architectural details, sloped roofs, and a focus on connecting with nature, the design reflects the client's desire for a residence that blends natural elements with elegant built forms. The site, located at the end of a 3-meter-wide road and surrounded by residential areas, posed challenges like limited setbacks and cross ventilation, which were overcome through a carefully planned central courtyard. This courtyard, open to the sky and centered around a Terminalia plant, forms the heart of the home, connecting all key spaces including the foyer, living, dining, family living, master bedroom, and study. It allows the client to experience rain and sunlight within the home while also facilitating natural ventilation throughout the common areas via sliding windows.

The landscape design leverages the site's gentle slope, incorporating subtle level differences that lead to a recessed sit-out area at the front of the house. This sit-out provides privacy from neighboring properties while offering a peaceful space to enjoy the lush surroundings. The sit-out transitions into the foyer, which features a grand laminated glass window that provides a secure yet uninterrupted view of the central courtyard. The sloped roof design along the sides of the home enhances privacy, blocking views into the courtyard from neighboring two-storied buildings, while also complementing the colonial aesthetic.

The residence accommodates four bedrooms, each with attached toilets, designed to meet the specific needs of the family. The parents' bedroom is strategically placed in the southeast corner, offering a direct view of the entrance gate for safety and convenience. The open kitchen, located in the northeast corner, connects seamlessly to the dining area and includes an island counter that functions as a pantry and kitchen hob. The children's bedroom on the western side opens to a private courtyard, secured with a grill for safety, creating a secluded and functional outdoor space. The interior spaces are designed with colonial detailing, featuring wooden ceilings and fluted panels, while the furniture in the living and family areas is customized to provide views of the central courtyard, ensuring a constant connection with nature.

The choice of materials further enhances the colonial charm of the residence. Concrete blocks are paired with teak wood joinery and imported curved terracotta tiles to achieve a balance of durability and elegance. Intricate plastering details add to the architectural character, while the flat roof combined with terracotta truss roofing ensures reduced reliance on centralized air conditioning, improving energy efficiency. This design carefully balances functionality, aesthetics, and the client's desire to connect with nature, resulting in a timeless and comfortable home.
