Located in a residential area, Shareef residence is a single family
house located amidst lush green vegetation and ample amount of coconut trees at
Manjeri, Malappuram, Kerala. The 6 bedroom abode is facing towards the South
eastern side leaving a decent amount of space in the front yard for landscape,
that also act as a shield from the southern heat. The project is the result of
a careful look at the preferences of the residents, prioritizing the best
sunlight, good cross ventilation and local visuals, along with valuing the
elements available in the surroundings.
A building concept following an eco-friendly approach based on
optimizing the climate and natural ventilation. The house is characterized by
multiple indoor courtyards and connection with the outdoor spaces. The plan was
developed by keeping down the social areas and augmenting the interactive
family areas inside the house. The interior of the house has been structured
according to the user preferences.
The interactive private zone towards the inner core of the house brings
together the three bedrooms with attached washrooms in the ground floor. The
central core of the house is enhanced by zoning the dining space at the center.
The family living have been placed towards the North western side that acts as
a connecting space between the open kitchen and the dining area with generous
openings and allowing greater connection with the landscape and neighboring
vegetation. Each space connects to the next flowing into one another and thus
becoming one larger space. The interior courtyard keeps the core connecting the
upper level; a sumptuous void for light and air. There’s no need for air conditioning as the
house has ample natural ventilation throughout all two levels. The site entry
and the exterior view of the house are enhanced through an oblique approach
that gives an emphasis on the beauty of the large corner window in the formal
living area. The entry to the house is centralized, adorned with beautiful landscape
and courtyard. The large glazed panels adorning social spaces extend the inner
spaces to the Exterior, generating a particular sensation of expansion and
communication.
As we go into the interiors, wooden texture has been used in most of the
spaces, with a combination of grey marble stone and black granite. The house
follows a mood board of cool grey undertone throughout. The multiple courtyards
have been utilized well into the public and private spaces .The usage of wooden
partition walls maintains both the privacy and openness of spaces. The Eastern
sunlight is allowed to filter through the outdoor patio that opens up to the
Central Hall, which helps to lit up the family areas. The patios and courtyards
along with the openings on the three sides of the central hall keep the house
ventilated throughout the day. Each bedroom maintained at an independent corner
of the residence provides utmost privacy and visual aesthetics.
The courtyard behind the formal living has been designed to be a minimalist
garden; creates a focal point keeping the context of the environment more serene.
The material palette of the courtyard blends well to the surroundings. The visual
connections through the patios have been well integrated to the interiors with
the usage of active landscape elements.
