Nestled amidst lush green paddy fields, this residence is a harmonious blend of simplicity, sustainability, and contextual sensitivity. From the moment one turns off the main road onto a narrow path winding through the fields, the journey itself sets the tone for the design approach. The 180-degree panoramic view of the landscape became a defining factor in shaping the architectural response.

The plot, elevated 3.5 meters above road level, offered a unique vantage point. By strategically placing the entry along a side road, the residence maximizes its connection to the surrounding fields. A long verandah and an extended deck seamlessly integrate indoor and outdoor spaces, encouraging the family to engage with the breathtaking landscape. The architectural language remains minimalistic, drawing inspiration from vernacular traditions while ensuring a modern, functional living environment.

Designed for a software developer and his family, the home balances openness and privacy. The interior revolves around an open-plan living and dining space with a soaring double-height ceiling, fostering a sense of expansiveness. In consideration of the family’s Muslim Orthodox values, private areas—including bedrooms, the kitchen, and utility spaces—are tucked towards the rear, connected by a spacious passage that enhances circulation.

A central courtyard anchors the common areas, allowing ample natural light and ventilation. Repurposed windows and doors from a demolished building add character to the courtyard, reinforcing the project's commitment to sustainability and resourcefulness. The courtyard seating incorporates an abandoned wooden log, adding a rustic charm to the space.

Passive cooling strategies are seamlessly integrated into the design. A skylight above the stairwell not only bathes the interior in natural light but also facilitates the stack effect, enhancing ventilation. The sloping roof extends over both floors, mitigating heat gain from the harsh western sun. Roofing tiles, salvaged from an old building, further reinforce the project’s sustainable ethos.

The material palette respects the local context and sustainability principles. Kota stone has been used for flooring, providing durability and a natural aesthetic. Laterite blocks form the primary structure, ensuring thermal comfort and a strong visual identity. A textured finish with yellow oxide adds warmth and character to the walls. Wood elements, crafted from mahogany, enhance the interiors, while decor elements repurpose parts of an old wooden bed back, adding a sense of history and nostalgia.

The first floor features a long balcony offering uninterrupted views of the fields, along with a compact office space and two bedrooms. The exterior maintains a restrained aesthetic, embracing white cladding and natural materials that blend with the surroundings.

The landscaping respects the site's natural contours, with a sloping terrain at the front designed to minimize the height of the retaining wall. This approach not only enhances the visual connection with the land but also responds effectively to the local climate.

This residence is a direct response to its environment and the client’s needs, embodying a philosophy of simplicity and sustainability. By seamlessly integrating contextual elements and passive design strategies, the home offers a serene, functional retreat that remains deeply connected to its landscape.
