Crafted by Spacekarma designers, this 4BHK apartment is reimagined to become a sanctuary of luxury, emotions, culture and memories.

How does one define a second home? The essence of any home is its people and it shapes around their life stories. For another place to feel like home is a daunting idea. Nestled in the heart of Ahmedabad, this apartment was a 'second home' purchase of a beautiful couple, seeking that homely feeling in India when they come back from Dubai. Shweta K Jain, principal interior designer at Spacekarma believes that the design ardently transcends fleeting trends, it's a unique representation of people living in it. When she met her client, they were sure that they wanted a home that would remind them of their roots and traditions. Having spent most of their lives abroad living in different countries and cultures, this couple yet still couldn't manage to escape the desi heartbeat of India. Situated at Parimal char rasta, buzzing with traffic and people, this 4BHK apartment embodies mindfulness while carefully accommodating the vibrant nuances of the Indian lifestyle.

They wanted this home to become a warm welcome from their culture, a sigh of relief, a remembrance of who they truly are and a place they'd always want to come back to. Shweta built a narrative around the house that would encapsulate the essence of the house but for every story, there comes a challenge. This endeavour was no exception. "It's every designer's dream to do a project that has no limits attached, and this time we had it," Shweta remarked with palpable enthusiasm but little did she know that the same dream could also pose an intense challenge. "We were overwhelmed with the amount of ideas we could think of. I guess, it's always easier to work within boundaries– you know your space!" She continued, "Here we went berserk, not knowing where to begin as we weren't given any budget or time restraints." This project came as a reminder for the designers that they are artists first and architects later!

Brainstorming for days long, Shweta finally landed on that perfect idea! Blending and bringing in the real culture with livable and perfecting amenities of today was one thing but Spacekarma designers wanted to take it one level ahead by aligning their design journey with that of their clients'. They literally went down to basics, just as the couple wished to touch the roots. The very first design principles taught to an interior designer student are lines, curves and forms. These artists went on to sketch those around the house. Shweta proudly recalled, "We literally started drawing lines and curves on the floors and that's when we knew we had cracked it."

In the curves, they found a rhythm that eventually ran throughout the home– on floors, on walls, in basic furniture and in its essence. The resultant synthesis was a veritable symphony of textures and hues. This rhythm was well complimented by the interplay of materials in uncommon combinations like terrazzo, white marbles and piccolo tiles on the floor. For walls, they went for an extraordinary choreography of leather panels and hand-woven panels. The subdued palette of greiges, buffs and nudes lend an elegance to the space, culminating in a tableau of organic rhythm. A rhythm so evident and captivating that they chose to call it as House of Rhythm.

Among the details of traditions, the couple sought to imbue their abode with the modern comforts to which they had grown accustomed. 4 BHK was reimagined to build a home that houses all amenities.

Office of House of Rhythm by Space Karma Design Studio

Their clients wished to have a home office - A space where ideas take a break on the shelves, and every figure provokes your thoughts. An office where numbers take flight and the only thing more stable than their plans is their son's love for legos! Clean, calm yet full of life—just the way the financial wizards like it. A room with a view so fabulous, it doubles as a procrastination station! Where market charts meets sumptuous style, and work gets done... eventually!"

Shweta had a vivid memory of every meeting with her client. "This couple wasn't ordinary. I always felt this strong vibe, that infectious energy & a sense of power every time I met them." She chose Lord Shiva's sacred bull Nandi for the artwork in the living room to articulate that same power. The mesmerizing matrix of threads, intricately woven and knotted, form the majestic form of Nandi. The artist has brilliantly delivered that sense of rhythm in the patterns of threads with Nandi intensely mirroring strength and power.

It took them 1 year to take the project from ideation to execution. Each corner has details and some memories to share. The couple had imagined their home to be a cozy display of their loving memories. There's a sculpture capturing the essence of Lord Ganesha, derived from a cherished photograph that they had gifted to a friend, which is a testament to the boundless creativity and skill of its creator. Every aspect of the sculpture is meticulously crafted, capturing the intricate details of Lord Ganesha as depicted in the photograph. From the curve of its trunk to the gentle arch of the elephantine ears, each feature is rendered with precision and reverence. Positioned at the entrance of the house, the sculpture beckons visitors with its welcoming presence, more like a blessing. While faithfully replicating the image from the photograph, it also bears subtle nuances and personalized touches that lend the art an attractive charm.

The stories don't end here. In the hallway, just outside their bedroom door, hangs an exact replica of an old photograph capturing their parents. "They gave us this really old photograph of their parents and wanted to put that on a wall somewhere. We were touched by their thought and felt that art could make this picture feel more alive. We took a chance and got it done in charcoal," said Shweta. The charcoal painting carefully mirrors every detail of the original snapshot. Strategically placed, the painting serves as a constant reminder of their roots each time they step out into the passage. Amidst the grayscale, pops of red add that heartwarming touch of liveliness. A bindi on the mother's forehead and the vibrant hue of her saree stand out against the monotone backdrop, injecting warmth and vitality into the scene. This painting is more than just a replication of a photograph; it's a representation of enduring love and respect. "Their reactions were priceless," Shweta added.
