House of rya° is less a project and more a self portrait translated into space. Located in Ghaziabad within a dense and rapidly expanding urban fabric, the studio was conceived as a quiet counterpoint to the city around it. It withdraws from the external pace and instead creates an environment that feels slower, more reflective, and deeply personal.

Designed by the principal designer for herself, the project moves away from a conventional client brief and instead begins with an introspective question of what kind of space allows clarity of thought. The response was not rooted in efficiency or rigidity, but in comfort and familiarity. The intention was to create a space that feels lived in from the very beginning, as if it has already witnessed time, ideas, and pauses.

The design unfolds as a series of moments rather than a fixed program. A chair that encourages lingering, a desk that supports without dominating, and corners that are intentionally left open to hold moments of silence. There is a deliberate restraint in the approach, allowing the space to remain slightly incomplete, like a thought still forming.

Materiality becomes the primary medium of expression. Each surface is selected for how it will age and evolve. Wood acquires warmth over time, fabrics soften with use, and finishes respond subtly to changing light conditions. The palette remains muted, not as an aesthetic choice alone, but to allow these nuances to emerge.

A defining element within the space is the treatment of a concealed storage volume. Instead of reducing it to a purely functional insert, it is reimagined as a sculptural surface with a soft curvature and a muted metallic finish. It interacts with light and movement, becoming a quiet focal presence that anchors the room while seamlessly integrating storage within the overall composition.

The spatial layout avoids rigid zoning. Work and pause are not separated but allowed to overlap naturally. The studio shifts its function throughout the day, at times becoming a workspace, at times a reading corner, and at times simply a place to sit in stillness.

House of rya° ultimately reflects an approach to design that prioritizes intuition over performance. It is not conceived to impress, but to feel honest and instinctive. In doing so, it becomes a direct extension of the designer’s way of thinking, where space is not fixed, but continuously evolving.
