The Indraprasth house in Rajkot, Gujarat is an ancestral home to the Vajir family. Built many decades ago, the house required attention not just structurally but aesthetically as well. Previously the house had a typical floor plan for ground and first-floor levels with living, dining, kitchen and two bedrooms. Families of two brothers occupied both levels.

As the young family of four occupies the entire house, major renovation work had to be undertaken considering the requirements of the new generation. They ripped off the house to its basics and imagined a modern version of the house the clients aspired to have. Their brief was to convert this into a villa with living, dining, kitchen, four bedrooms, a home theatre and a library with a terrace.

The clients had a knack for furniture details and a bold colour pallet while inclining towards building minimal spaces. This drove us to experiment and find the right balance between the two. They worked towards achieving a monochromatic material palette with few elements boldly contrasting. It's like having a few red apples scattered on a beige plate. Instead of red, they chose shades of green, mauve and black to form a language of the space where you're in. The plate for us was the beige walls, tiles and timber veneer.

Every corner of the Indraprasth house is meticulously designed and detailed. The house welcomes you into the foyer with brass, beige tiling and wooden ceiling. Directing one towards the dark green sofas with cushion flutings and eye-catchy centre tipoii. This space flows into the dining and cosy backyard garden with a beautiful tree and a fountain.

On the first floor, the mauve-coloured wall in the library attracts one's gaze from the dark-toned staircase. The wooden railing is carved with incredible craftsmanship with mild steel supports. The geometric flooring at the entrance of the library provides an attractive edge.

The library overlooks the street on one side and merges with the home theatre on the other side through a five feet pivot door. The library seating has two Pierre Jeanneret-inspired chairs, a sofa with a wooden cylinder to rest your leg while sitting cross-legged and a swing. All this is bound in a language through wood and brass details.

The house attempts to create a peaceful ambience through all its materials. The details worked out throughout the house are sleek and intricate and the spaces achieved have a fresh minimal approach with the boldness of a few selected colours.
