Amidst the city of Solapur, Maharashtra, sits this 4450 sqft residence gently on an existing commercial structure, with a basic design requirement of 4BHK split on the 6th and 7th floor. This existing conventionally designed column and beam structure became remarkably important and worked as a conceptual base in designing a dynamic spatial sequence through a series of spacious, luxurious & modern internal spaces.
The planning holds a private service vestibule connecting an entrance foyer that opens into the heart of the house hosting a bold suspended stairway within a double height ceiling, stretching high to invite the natural lighting. The rubber wood cladding of the staircase against a visually contrasting stone veneer volume, echoes the rich textural character and contemporary expression that the architect intended to explore throughout the residence. The remaining space on this level is further fragmented into a living area that is visually connected to double height, followed by an open kitchen, dining area, two bedrooms and other ancillary spaces.
The staircase leads oneself into a reading lounge on the second level, subsequently extending into an intimate terrace offering a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor. The space further on this level grows into two master bedrooms and a private terrace completing the internal arrangement of striking spaces.
The dynamic aesthetics of the entire house is tailored together through a dialogue created by the “vertical stack” or “vertical offset” patterns, collectively visible in the flooring, ceiling, wall treatment and the furniture design. The use of dark grey colored stone veneer as a canvas for the double height not just enhances the impression of its volume but also resonates the warmth of wood creating a sense of luxury at the very first glance. The continuity of pattern on the ceiling in wood envelops the interiors allowing a fine and discrete integration with the built fabric.
The terrace is integrally designed with the interiors adding a subtle tonal warmth to a long linear volume. The ceilings in the bedrooms were visually defined by the existing structural frame. The intentional use of wooden rafters with embedded artificial lighting accentuates and compensates for the otherwise dull ceiling. The choreography between the naturally well-lit interiors through various fenestrations, and the artificial magnetic track lighting, collectively animate the interiors by adding a 4th dimension.
The bold interiors with robust textural choices ranging from stone veneers, painted glass for wardrobe, concrete finish paint etc. harmoniously integrate with plush furniture to define a contemporary formal language without having to impair the spatial quality of the house. The additional freshness of delicate plantations woven through the interiors accompanied by locally sourced sculptures and artifacts create a subtle sense of purity in the rich and luxurious surroundings.
