Shaped by parameters not limited to the physical and contextual realm, this residence is an extension of the existing residential unit designed to embody the ethos of its inhabitants and become a repository of memories and experiences. The site sets in busy environs that consist of typical residential units. This whole establishment contradicts the need for a secluded peaceful abode, therefore the creators of PiNiK - The Architect's Design Studio intended at designing a space that makes one look inward and develop a connection with the soul.
Situated on a site of 1100 sq. ft in Amravati, the house is for a family of working individuals, which aims to offer them a perfect psychological escape from a hectic lifestyle. The design approach was to let the hierarchies of functions, requirements, and climate dictate the evolution of the plan so that the house becomes an organic extension of the family itself.
The owners had a simple and practical brief –they wanted a sublime residence, with contemporary furnishings and timeless charm but in stages. The owners decided to have the first floor done along with the elevation of the house in the first stage and the ground floor renovation in the second stage. In response to creating something enduring, the designer opted for a modern design-inspired narrative. The designer believes that experience comes first and the form much later, therefore the aim was to create a state of belonging not just with physical form but with senses. This ideology directed the overall footprint. Talking about spatial planning, it had its challenges as renovation projects make one feel trapped in the maze of past and present.
The challenge was to redefine the structural frame with more fluidity, openness, and pull-in natural light and ventilation. Thus, the planning scheme evolved, allowing spaces to flow into one another, whilst keeping circulation and living spaces well-defined. The built fabric consists of an existing ground floor with a living, kitchen, dining, and two bedrooms. Whereas family living, dining, and two bedrooms form the first floor. As one enters the house, eyes are naturally drawn by the landscaped balcony with an earthy finish. This balcony creates a foyer and sets the stage for the entire house. This beautifully crafted balcony with seating leads one to the living area. Inside the living area, a 3+2 sofa, statement chair, TV unit in smoked oak veneer, and metallic fittings look reminiscent of nature. The wallpaper is used behind the sofa to add drama to the entire set in soft tones.
As we move ahead in the dining space, another element that has a subliminal impact is the swing beside it with a veneer finish. All the public spaces in the abode are connected to private areas by arched passageways. There is a luxury brim in bedrooms with an elegant bathroom. They use speakeasy and snug design language by using an impressive array of earthy, sober hues such as beige, brown, grey, green, white, and more made from natural dyes that elevate the look and mood. Accentuated by natural light, the clean edges and surfaces of the furniture give the space an embodied spirit. Each bedroom has a character of its own.
Keeping the key color choice white, grey-beige with a metallic bookshelf takes center stage in the kids' bedroom, while the other suite is the shades of brown and grey. Overall, a conscious attempt was made to avoid creating dead spaces that do not contribute to the overall feel and flow. The design elements were all arranged to create a sense of spaciousness and cohesion.
In the end, the designer mentioned, "Architecture need not be 'brand new' and 'big', but can be the simplest possible solution for the given requirement." This is the thought that led to the project.
