MIZHI is a 2900 sqft tropical, rustic, and minimal residence designed by Yuuga Design for Nandhu and his family. Situated on a triangle-shaped plot near a large natural pond to the south, and surrounded by agricultural land to the north and east, the design of MIZHI takes full advantage of its natural surroundings.

The home features an open floor plan that connects the common areas—living room, dining, kitchen, and stairs—while maintaining privacy for the bedrooms. A private courtyard extends from the living room, offering stunning views of the pond and serving as a gathering space for friends and family. The home is further enhanced by two balconies: a lengthy veranda from the bedrooms overlooking the pond to the south, and a balcony on the north side offering views of the agricultural land. The sit-out is positioned on the east side to greet the morning light.

The roof is clad in natural clay tiles, while locally sourced palm planks were used for the ceiling to reduce heat and provide protection from heavy rains. The interior features oxide flooring, oxide plastered walls, and raw cement finishes, giving the home a distinctly rustic aesthetic. The walls are constructed with mud bricks, and stone flooring is used in key areas to emphasize the connection to nature.

MIZHI’s design celebrates the use of locally sourced and natural materials. Mahogany wood was chosen for the furniture, all custom-made to meet the family’s needs. Additionally, fixed furniture such as beds, dining tables, and seating were built into the home using stone masonry and concrete with oxide plastering, resulting in both cost efficiency and durability.

The color palette of the home reflects its natural surroundings, incorporating stone gray, cement finishes, terracotta, and mud tones. White is used sparingly, allowing the natural hues of the materials to stand out.

The home is designed to be well-ventilated and airy, with every detail maximizing the benefits of the unique site. By experimenting with materials like mud, terracotta, oxide, stone, palm wood, and mahogany, MIZHI stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design and sustainable material choices, all while meeting the family’s requirements for functionality and aesthetics.
