Living room of Negotiating Irregularity by Studio Kalateet
The living room is envisioned as a warm, shared space for a family of four. A veneer-clad backdrop addresses a particularly challenging wall condition, doubling as a series of niches that add depth while maintaining visual calm. The television unit conceals an angular wall behind it and is intentionally designed to offer a minimal, unobstructed view, allowing the space to remain visually open.
Given the longitudinal proportions of the hall, an additional lower seating arrangement was introduced to encourage informal family gatherings. This seating evokes the familiarity of sitting together on a traditional chatai, reinforcing the idea of shared moments and everyday comfort. Behind this seating, a scaled wall storage unit aligns with the surrounding niches, balancing everyday utility with a sense of visual rhythm.
Soft north light filters into the living area, lending the space a gentle, diffused glow. This sense of simplicity and warmth extends into the lobby, where a wall adorned with lotus motifs introduces a quiet cultural reference symbolizing serenity and togetherness. Muted upholstery tones and neutral wall finishes are subtly elevated through warmth and layered texture, while the flooring grounds the space, striking a restrained balance between contemporary ease and understated opulence.

The kitchen continues the home’s restrained material approach. A nano white countertop extends seamlessly onto the backsplash, lending the space a clean, continuous surface. At its centre, a black galaxy island acts as both a functional workspace and an informal gathering point a place where daily routines intersect with moments of pause.

The challenges of the inherited structure are more pronounced in Son’s room. A strategically placed partition wall addresses this directly, offering a cleaner visual frame from the entrance while reorganizing the room into distinct functional zones. Articulated in two materials, the partition features a smooth upper surface featuring vertical grooves that help recalibrate the grid lines of the distorted space, while the lower portion is treated as a restrained highlight, adding quiet definition. A tilted south-facing wall is absorbed into a built-in wardrobe, allowing the irregularity to dissolve into function.
The bed back wall is composed of stone panels framing either end and a softer central surface introducing texture and weight. On the other side of the partition, a west-facing window brings in natural light, illuminating the dressing area with a full-height mirror. An otherwise underutilized corner is reimagined as a reading nook, reinforcing the idea that no space is left unresolved. Throughout the room, soft muted tones form the base palette, while louvers and stone surfaces introduce texture and emphasis. Alignments are carefully maintained, allowing the space to feel calm, balanced and visually settled.

The daughter’s bedroom approaches irregularity through a more fluid language. Here, the sharpness of the existing geometry is softened through curves and layered surfaces, creating a space that feels intimate and enveloping. Columns positioned beside the bed presented a key spatial challenge; additional vertical elements were introduced to echo their proportions and integrate them into the spatial composition. The bed back wall becomes the focal point, articulated through a two-level play of materials that extends across its width. Rounded, double-layered headboards reinforce the sense of fluidity. The television wall is kept minimal, finished with subtle vertical beading in a soft pastel tone that complements the room’s palette.
A full-height wardrobe spans the extended portion of the room, detailed with subtle wave patterns, echoing the overall aesthetic without drawing undue attention. A sharply tilted wall is thoughtfully resolved into a window seat with integrated storage, allowing function to emerge naturally from constraint.

Across the home, the design philosophy remains consistent: to reveal functionality and clarity through softness rather than excess. Constraints are not hidden, but carefully negotiated. The project stands as a quiet homage to small-town acknowledgement of realities, mindful of material availability and everyday life while asserting that true luxury lies not merely in finishes or materials, but in intent, thoughtfulness, and the quality of lived experience. At Kalateet, this belief forms the foundation of every design decision, where luxury is understood as a nuanced extension of purpose and care.
