Located in Kalamassery, Kerala, the residence project ‘Parudheesa’ designed by ‘Sacred Saga Architects’ stands out with its unique and prominent façade. Constructed in stark contrast to the nearby residences, this home is thoughtfully crafted and intended to provide a peaceful retreat filled with earthy luxury for a couple and their parents with their primary requirement of having spaces that imbues a feeling of serenity, also providing an escapade from the daily hustles of life. Furthermore, large, and cozy spaces that could accommodate their extensive social circle and gatherings was an essential requirement.

The entrance to the house is from the north. Here, the rooms flow into one another, giving off a sense of a spacious ambience while still being functional. The ground floor was designed considering the accommodation for their parents. This floor comprises the main spaces including the living room, dining room, bedroom, and a kitchen, with the dining area at the centre, connecting the other rooms. The orientation and the location of the work area is a notable feature here, which is on the north side and adorned with landscapes adjacent to it, enhancing the ambience. The spatial layout here, is kept simplistic highlighting an ease of access within.

The form of the building is a play of recess and relief. The façade of the structure makes the highlight of the building which is an exposed brick façade bordered by concrete cantilevers that creates reliefs around it. A stairway from outside, leads to first-floor entrance, enabling independent entrances to both the levels. Here, one can see the interplay of natural light in the living area, that features double height walls with tall fenestrations which further adds to its aesthetics and makes it look very spacious. Moreover, the exposed brick façade, is supported by openable windows, adding to the visual appeal, and manipulates natural lighting to diffuse into the spaces.

The open kitchen on the first floor, is aligned with the clients needs and faces the living area, making it a highly interactive and sociable space for the users.

A single foot metal staircase leads to a loft on the first floor, above the kitchen, incorporating a comfortable seating area that can be used as a personal space for reading and leisure and is perfectly lit by the windows positioned along the façade. The single foot stair design has helped to save space by reaching a 2.5m height in a shorter span.

Exposed concrete and bricks creates a cold-warm contrast that makes the interiors appealing  and aids in blending an earthy feel to it. Along with the concrete and brick walls, the green colour used for the components gives it a tropical theme and plays a crucial role in imparting emotions to the house.

The bedroom on the upper floor is very spacious and well lit and also has the access to the balcony. The layout is incorporated with an ‘L’ shaped in-built seating running along the windowsill. The space has been designed to be the perfect spot to encapsulate the concept of the clients and for a warm and cozy corner within.

The aesthetics of the design are reflected in the materials used, colour patterns and lighting. Architectural styles like contemporary modernism, minimalism, and a tinge of industrialist theme overlaps each-other to form a perfect amalgam to reimagine a home space.  Other components including furniture, openings, and the staircase, contrasting dash of colour on certain building components accentuates the colour pattern inside, adding charm to the spatial experience.

Jaali works on the facade add to the design aesthetics, minimises the direct sunlight in the interiors and helps in natural ventilation and hence provides passive cooling inside.

The client’s affinity towards nature and plants have been addressed by providing niches for landscapes, which are incorporated at the foyer and the balcony near the bedroom which enhances the tranquil and calm ambience of the house, and therefore making the moniker ‘Parudheesa’ perfectly suitable for this project.
