A home of relaxed lifestyle, framed corners and a practical palette of materials

Pune favours the indulgent, and so is the Rao Residence: a home unhurried, modest, yet tasteful spirit. Designed by architect Priyanka Ranjekar of her eponymous practice, the home belongs to a client who lives abroad, while the daughter and the grandmother reside here.

Located in a storied neighbourhood in Pune, Mr. Rao had already envisioned his perfect 3BHK: functional, minimal furniture, a neutral backdrop to wrap the house, with accents in complementing shades of wood. “The daughter, however, wanted a pop of colour in her room, and that’s where a fresh accent has come alive in her room,” Priyanka notes.

The home’s layout is mindfully designed to eliminate the need for partitions with a deliberate exception made in the shoe foyer, designed to act as a subtle spatial divider. “Since there wasn’t a natural spot for the main door that offered privacy, we created one with a wooden frame that runs along the walls and ceiling. This remains my favourite detail, as I love framed spaces in a home,” says the designer.

Past the shoe foyer lies a modest living–dining layout furnished by Sanjar Furniture, placed back to back with the TV wall facing both. A concealed storage space behind the dining table, a palette of soft textures wherever needed, and slender legs of harder materials — every detail speaking of its purpose. Boasting a panoramic view is the balcony framed by a large glass opening, unveiling the baby blue bar unit, which can easily become a part of the living room whenever needed.

A coherent thread of sculpted, customised furniture pieces that double up as decor, runs around the house, adorned on the Marble floor from Mohan Marble. The entire house also thrives on abundant natural light all-day, that strolls in through the expansive windows. “There is a certain rawness in the style, retrofitted to suit modern needs; the intersection of old and new is seen in all my projects,” Priyanka mentions when asked about the dominant style of the house. Also noticeable are the fluted details running throughout the house in horizontals and verticals, adding just the right amount of surface interest. The Hybec provided lighting is kept understated, with occasional pendant or modern wall lights paired alongside can lights and recessed ceiling fixtures.

The master bedroom has its bed hugged by a framed nook on the top and a curved backrest below. “I love working in clean cuts and straight lines, unless I am asked particularly to design in a curvature. This time it is the maple backrest.” Facing this arrangement is the rough cut veneer on the wardrobes that lend an earthy texture and a deeper tone to the room. Minimal bedside tables and a small open shelf, framed above the bed keeps a track of the bedside essentials.

The daughter’s bedroom, with sage green accents and curves laid gracefully in strict lines is evident in the wardrobes that shoulder the bed. For her, a comfortable reading nook is designed in the corner window draped with dreamy curtains from D’Decor and completed by a soft sofa chair. A bed and a chest of drawers fitted in the recessed wall space face each other in here.

On similar lines of functionality and comfort is the grandmother’s room, designed with an aligned maturity: elements that provide comfort, are rooted firmly from a natural source, and are functionally superior — the rattan inserts in the wardrobe agree. Little details like a cushioned backrest, a bigger side table to accommodate handy things, and accessible wardrobe compartments make up for a comfortable room.

Indeed, the house is unhurried, practical, and in ‘good frame,’ for a good life to be lived.
