Seldom do architects enjoy unfettered creative freedom in their designs. However, in this residence in Ayyanthole, Kerala, conceptualised and designed by DD architects, the 4.5-cent plot becomes a playground for unbounded exploration, resulting in a harmonious fusion of diverse forms, levels, and materials. The design inspiration primarily stemmed from two primary sources - the clients' aspiration for an atypical home and the architect’s vision to transform it into a true embodiment of "freedom of expression". This fusion has ultimately resulted in a home that fosters privacy, tranquility, and an inward connection with the natural world.

The project has faced several setbacks and challenges, yet all those aided in fulfilling the vision of designing an atypical home. The primary design challenge has been to create a sense of privacy within the limited space while maintaining a spacious feeling for the home. The proximity of the adjacent buildings also added to the privacy issues, for the homeowners who desired a peaceful living environment to relax, after their busy schedules at work. Hence, it was crucial to find a solution that allowed privacy without sacrificing the feeling of openness and freedom.

As a result, the design evolves in linear planes and volumes, seamlessly intertwining different levels and connecting various volumes, featuring double-height and triple-height spaces. The strategic placement of voids and fluidic surfaces plays a pivotal role in breaking down the compact area of the floor plan while maintaining privacy. Carefully integrated throughout the layout, these voids act as openings, allowing for the passage of light, and fostering an introverted spatial narrative. These design elements also disrupt the smaller square footage of the floor plan and promote seamless movement, enticing inhabitants to navigate through the home with fluidity and ease.

The primary palette of materials is dichotomous, adhering to concrete and terracotta, serving as warm-cool counterpoints to one another. The ceiling in exposed concrete, interspersed by coconut shells, stands out, creating a light & shade drama in the interiors. The inbuilt seating in rough cuddapah stones, blue oxide floors, and wooden furnishings equally define the rich tactile language of the interiors. Further, off-white oxide finishes adorn certain areas, blending with the overall scheme of materials.

An ode to the freedom of expression, every corner and every element of this home speaks to the power of unrestricted creativity. It breathes life into its surroundings, a tribute to the audacious spirit that thrives in the face of challenges.
