SARADA VIHAR is a striking exemplar of traditional Kerala architecture, elegantly nestled amidst the bustling cityscape and commercial zone of Chettiyangadi in the Thrissur district of Kerala. Its timeless allure lies in the seamless fusion of heritage and modern constructiontechnique, harmonizing the past and present.

Designed by 7th Hue Architecture Studio, from the house of viewpOint dezigns, this resplendent home accommodates a family of six, embracing the essence of Kerala’s cultural ethos, yet suiting to the tropical climate of the region. The renovation breathes new life into an ancestral abode that was once owned by K C Panicker. Passed down to his daughter, Dr. Sujatha, the house was thoughtfully constructed, paying homage to its Kerala roots. The primary desideratum of the client regarding the site was the conservation of vegetation therein.

Client considerations have been artfully woven into the architecture. The desire for privacy, a necessity for an elderly resident, is elegantly met with a design that shields against road borne dust and dirt. The client being a doctor, an additional consultation area is provided, having a separate entrance, designed to offer privacy for professional interactions while maintaining a harmonious connection with the main house.

Upon stepping inside, the “idanazhi”, an enchanting passageway that holds cultural significance in Kerala’s architectural heritage, beckons exploration. This passage serves as a unifying thread, seamlessly weaving together the various spaces within the home. The artful integration of this element ensures a fluid transition from room to room, inviting occupants to embark on a journey through both space and time.

One of the home’s most captivating facets lies in the ground floor living area, strategically positioned adjacent to a serene dry courtyard. Here, a captivating interplay of elements unfolds. A wooden folding partition, serving as a flexible boundary, creates an intriguing separation between openness and seclusion. This partition can be elegantly removed, transforming the space into a seamless expanse, blurring the lines between the spaces at will. The design’s adaptability harmoniously responds to the changing needs and desires of its occupants, offering a versatile canvas for daily life.

Two courtyards grace the residence, each with distinct purposes. The first, an intimate dry court, nestles within the house inviting tranquility. The second courtyard, a breathtaking open-to-sky expanse, serves a dual role as a serene escape and a buffer against the urban clamor. This thoughtful feature is particularly significant given the house’s location amidst the high traffic, demonstrating an ingenious solution that elevates both form and function.

The open courtyard, a verdant oasis adorned with “tulsithara”, stands as a celebration of Kerala’s cultural roots. Lush greenery intertwines with a majestic mango tree, its branches sheltering a tranquil seating area below. The openness to sky presents an enchanting spectacle as raindrops descend, nourishing earth and delighting the senses. This multifunctional courtyard harmoniously invites natural elements while providing a serene space for residents to connect with their surroundings, yet maintaining the privacy.

The building’s heritage is not just a story, but an integral part of its very structure- with reclaimed wood from the original dwelling now seamlessly incorporated, enhancing both its aesthetics and structural integrity. Upon entering, the interior unveils a captivating tableau of traditional elements, meticulously preserved and integrated. The house showcases the enduring beauty of Laterite and Kadappa stone. Exquisite woodwork, meticulously curated for patterns and textures, graces both interior and exterior spaces, infusing the home with warmth and character. Polished wooden pillars constructed according to the traditional style adorns the entry area as well as the inner courtyard.

The exterior facade of Sharada Vihar is a captivating ode to Kerala’s architectural grandeur. Its steep sloping roof, adorned with intricately carved wooden eaves and open to sky courtyard with a traditional “tulsithara” bestows a regal charm. Striking color-paned windows allow vibrant hues to dance across the canvas of white walls, rustic laterite, stoic stone, and timeless wood, breathing life into every corner. Window seats thoughtfully positioned not only frame captivating outdoor vistas, but also offer moments of reflection and reprieve.
