The RAS house was a home-coming for a very smart, intelligent and rooted Indian couple in their mid 60’s. The duo, who had been living in the USA since past almost 30 years, decided to make an alternate home in India for a more social cause. The client’s main intention was to give back to the society by providing his expertise and knowledge and work with local authorities at grass-root level. The elegance, simplicity and subtleness that they carried in their personalities was what they intended to reflect in their abode too.

Choosing minimalistic theme, with a seamless flow, unobstructive spaces and a clutter-free home – these were some of the basic driving forces. Every room had to have abundant storage- hence those spaces had to be carved out efficiently.

In a given plot of 3065 sq.ft area, they designed a structure with an entry foyer, living, dining, dry and wet kitchens, 4 bedrooms, home theatre area and a terrace with gazebo. A small garden space, lift and staircase area were also carved out efficiently. Having lived in the US amidst larger spaces and with a deep liking for pristine white and grey, the material palette of grey and white was a clear choice.

They embarked upon this interesting journey by narrowing down their choices of materials and finishes. All the furniture pieces were designed and customised as per their anthropometry and specific needs. Grooves and intricate details were avoided, keeping in mind their resistance towards dust accumulation. The customised living room sofa were designed and executed with utmost care, to suit their ergonomics and yet look appealing. Very minute but crucial changes were made to achieve the desired comfort and elegance.

Where most people are reluctant to use white in kitchen, the case here was simply opposite! Their client loved the whites, and insisted on having an all-white kitchen! Also, they decide to use wood in its natural teak tone to the minimum. They chose to show its natural tone in main door, staircase area and one of the bedrooms with a minimum accent.

Client’s love for swing was of utmost priority. That reverberated with his childhood memories of fun, frolic and a carefree approach! This was achieved by installing a customised traditional, simple swing in the master bedroom, with no back, made in wood, and finished in white PU. This facilitated large oscillations. While not in use, it would not obstruct viewing the TV.

Blue pastel sofa and a fabric panelled headboard added a touch of calm vibe to the entire space of the master bedroom. One of the bedrooms was given a tropical vibe- where materials like cane were used in wardrobe shutters. The bed-back wall was hand painted on site. Two other bedrooms were also designed keeping white as a major canvas, while adding accents of grey in light fittings or wall textures.

The home theatre area had been designed to give a rustic grey vibe. They used a smoked veneer along with black stone for the counter top. A very savvy automation system was installed for a pleasant movie experience. An adjoining terrace gazebo was designed and executed with perfection for a perfect evening.

Within a limited space and a reasonably limited budget, a calm and vivid space was designed and executed. Prime importance was given to aesthetics and simplicity, but not overlooking functionality. Ease of access and easy-to-maintain areas were a top notch priority- given their lifestyle and age. What resulted was their dream home- where they unwind, socialise, relate and relive.
