A Layered Sanctuary in the City: ALAYAM Designed with Warmth, Memory, and Light

Set within a compact 30x40 site in a bustling urban neighbourhood, this four-bedroom residence was conceived as a response to spatial constraint, client nostalgia, and modern sensibilities. The design navigates the tight plot with a vertical spatial strategy—stacking volumes while carving out light courts, breezeways, and green pockets that breathe life into every corner of the home.

The client’s brief was emotionally grounded—they envisioned a warm, grounded space reminiscent of their ancestral home, yet reinterpreted through a more modern, minimal lens. The architecture balances this duality by anchoring the material palette in honest, tactile finishes: exposed brick, raw concrete, and natural Kota stone flooring bring an earthy, familiar texture, while clean lines and open volumes offer a contemporary sensibility.

Despite the limited footprint, spatial generosity is achieved through clever planning. The entry is raised, accessed via angled green-edged steps, which sets the tone for the house—a thoughtful journey, not just a threshold. Small planters and vertical greens are tucked throughout the facade and terraces, softening the raw materiality and connecting the indoors to nature wherever possible.

Natural light and ventilation were treated as primary design drivers. Large windows, open-to-sky cutouts, and a central skylight allow sunlight to filter through the house through the day, while ensuring passive cooling and reducing reliance on artificial light. Cross ventilation is carefully orchestrated with openings positioned along diagonal axes, ensuring airflow across rooms even during peak summer.

The heart of the home lies in the semi-open terrace on the upper floor—a shaded, contemplative space that invites both pause and community. It captures the spirit of courtyard living, adapted to a vertical urban format.

What emerges is a home that feels intimate, light-filled, and deeply personal. It resists ornamentation and excess, yet is far from austere. Every surface, shadow, and threshold carries intention—rooted in memory, designed for the present, and open to the rhythms of daily life.
