Balaji Abode, situated in the heart of Madurai, is a two-floor residence built above an existing ground floor.

Madurai, a land rich in history, became the primary source of inspiration for the project. We constantly looked to the context, while also pushing ourselves to reinterpret it and try something new across the home.

The brief was to create an old-school traditional home—and we went all out. The home comprises a foyer, living, dining + kitchen, and three bedrooms. While the shared spaces and one bedroom follow a cohesive old-school traditional aesthetic, the remaining two bedrooms are designed with distinct identities, each reflecting the personality of its user.

Every nook and corner is layered with detail, but never for the sake of it. Each element carries a narrative—whether it’s motifs inspired by Madurai’s temple architecture or custom-designed handles embedded with references to the city’s iconic sarees. Everything has a story.

Almost every component was custom-built on site, allowing us to maintain complete control over the design language and ensure that each decision stayed true to the overall narrative. Nothing is incidental—everything exists with intent.

The arched roof over the double-height space is one such exploration. Executed as a reverse filler slab, the process involved creating a temporary arch over flat shuttering. Terracotta tiles were then laid upside down, followed by reinforcement and concrete pouring.

Once the shuttering and temporary arch were removed, the result revealed itself—raw, tactile, and unexpectedly striking. It eventually became one of the defining features of the project, and quite literally, the talking point of the space.
