Nestled along the coast of Oaxaca, this house is designed to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings. The focus is on creating informal, open spaces with warm textures that evoke a simple, local way of life—uncomplicated and in tune with the environment.

The house takes advantage of panoramic views, carefully planned pathways, and practical protection from the elements. A large, expressive roof, inspired by the traditional palapa, serves as the key architectural feature. Light and airy, the roof provides shade from the sun and shelter from the rain while allowing for natural airflow, keeping the spaces cool and comfortable.

Built into a hillside, the house rises from a solid base that connects it to the land. The lower level is more enclosed, with carefully placed windows and openings to capture views, encourage cross-ventilation, and offer shade from the sun. Above, a lighter structure sits on top, creating a balance between the two levels and clearly defining the different spaces within the house.

The floor plan is simple yet efficient, designed to make the most of the space and the site. The L-shape layout guides the flow of movement through the home, creating a variety of experiences and views. A central concrete monolith serves as a dramatic staircase that leads to the pool and offers a peaceful spot to take in the horizon and ocean. This central element also subtly separates the social areas from the private rooms, creating a natural division between the lively and quieter spaces.

On the lower level, three guest rooms and the service area are connected directly to the garden, allowing for easy access to the outdoors. The upper level opens up to expansive views, with the main living areas feeling like an extension of the landscape. The master bedroom is located near the social spaces, making daily movement through the house easy and natural.

The design takes full advantage of the site’s natural features, with cross-ventilation, abundant natural light, and a comfortable microclimate that reduces the need for artificial cooling. The roof also includes a rainwater collection system, providing a sustainable water source during the rainy season. This home is a thoughtful response to its environment—practical, comfortable, and respectful of its Oaxacan roots. By blending traditional forms with modern design, it creates a space that feels both timeless and perfectly at home in its setting.
