This is a composite earth farmhouse, using locally available materials such as soil from the site and local stone to playfully create cobb, rammed earth and plastered earth wall panels. Each of these variations of earth playfully serves a different purpose such as optimizing heat gain, daylight (with recycled bottle walls) and ventilation with an elevated loft with a breathing tile roof, extracting hot air from the home and creating a cross draft with open windows. This little farmhouse is a demonstration of cost effective construction applying principles of sustainability along side low maintenance and durability.

A tiled sloping roof shades a striking Cobb wall punctured with triangular openings in a farmhouse designed by Studio Verge for an urban family moving to natural farming, forestry and grounded living. The sculptural 18” thick cobb wall stands on the Southwest corner, shading the interiors of this modest farmhouse. Located on the verdant lands of Madagondapally, about 65Km from the bustling life of cosmopolitan Bangalore in India.

This tiny 1000 Sft house features an open plan encompassing a living, dining and kitchen space opening to a loft and skylight above, behind which are nestled the more private bedroom spaces. A dramatic stairway holds center stage in this house. Bathed in a blue hue and lined with intricately patterned tiles, it leads onto a loft and then a terrace spaces overlooking the lake beyond.

Glistening recycled glass bottles inserted in the exterior walls of the loft space cast gleeful shadows as the sun moved through the day, adding a distinct touch to this sedate organic enterprise. Each room of the home overlooks a unique view, with strategic offsets to capture light and breeze from all sides.

Walls made of Cobb, rammed earth, adobe, brick, and mud plaster are all used tactically to address the varying exigencies of reducing heat gain, cost of construction and providing smart solutions to enable provisions for services respectively.  The design thus is both of the place and of the times even as it doffs a hat to traditional building technologies. 

Against the azure blues of the skies, this farmhouse at Madagondapally stands like a slice of earth clothed in the myriad rays of the sun.
