Devchhaya: A Divine Ode to Soulful Living

Tucked away in a quiet, leisurely vicinity in the city of Surat, Gujarat, Devchhaya- translated as ‘Blessings of God’- is not just a residence, but a spiritual haven. Spread across a luxurious 9,500 sq. ft., this architectural residential bungalow is a celebration of divinity in its purest, most perceptible form. Designed around a profound theme, the home is a striking amalgamation of material, colour, culture, and emotion- each element deliberately chosen to represent the divine essence. At its core, the house is guided by the symbolism of three fundamental natural elements- Rock, Water, and Wood- each pure and grounded, echoing the trinity of existence! These materials don’t just fill the space; they narrate a story of rootedness, and peace. Complementing this is a striking colour palette representing the three divine energies of nature: Blue for Water (Waves), Green for Nature (Growth) and Red for Energy. These hues aren’t only for the aesthetics; they are meditative, subtly embedded in every detail to evoke emotion and presence.

One is gently pulled into a world that feels otherworldly, from the very first step into Devchhaya. A stairwell in monochromatic layers of sandstone and concrete acts like a threshold, marking a sensory shift from the outside world to the sacred within. Antique ancestral brass pots- lovingly refurbished- now serve as part of a water feature, their gentle gurgling sound grounding the mind. A Natraja idol welcomes along with a humble wooden bench placed thoughtfully, encouraging one to pause and breathe.

Greeted by an interplay of craft, volume and light, one steps into the living area that is separated from the dining by an intricately crafted four-pillar partition carved from Valsadi teakwood and anchored with sculptural sandstone bases. The transition feels seamless, much like walking through a temple colonnade- silent yet graceful. The double-height family lounge basks in natural light that pours through expansive windows, but what truly captivates is the detail in the curtains; custom-designed with the word ‘Devchhaya’ woven in Morse code- the language of the spy. The three divine colours- blue, green and red- flutter subtly within the weave, gently reiterating the home’s spiritual philosophy.

Silent chants of a traditional motif appear throughout the home- etched in veneers on the ceiling, sandwiched between glass partitions, patterned in wallpaper and even plaited into AC grills. Nothing is ornamental for aesthetics’ sake; each element whispers a part of the same prayer. The home’s soul lies in its material palette. A single stone tells many stories- the Gwalior Mint Sandstone is observed in multiple textures and applications- entrance steps, sculptural furniture bases as well as stand-alone features. Every piece of furniture, pillar-partition and minute design elements are brought to life in Valsadi teakwood. The main-level flooring, in contrast, is a meditative white custom terrazzo, lending divine simplicity.

As daylight shifts across the room, so does the ambience with greenery around, that envelopes the double-height Puja space with its floor-to-ceiling glass framed in wood. An otta space- a traditional veranda-like seating- invites one to exhale, to be. Placed beside the main living space, it extends an invitation to step out into the open, relax amidst fresh air and embrace stillness at the end of the day.

The staircase is another homage to tradition, its tread carved in classical mouldings where each step is not just functional, but poetic- a rise into stories above, yet rooted in traditions below. On the second level, each bedroom tells a deeply personal tale. The expansive master bedroom, is coupled with a private TV lounge that offers a cozy escape, complete with a low-seating sofa ideal for introspective solitude or shared stories with loved ones. The daughter’s room with vibrant blue accents reflects modern femininity. Its minimal yet vibrant palette introduces a youthful spirit without straying from the overarching ethos of the home. The mother’s bedroom is a masterclass in dignified aging- quiet, composed and gracefully detailed. The bed-back panelled in traditional motifs becomes the room’s spiritual anchor, while muted colours and soft-furnishing enhance a sense of comfort and legacy.

What truly weaves Devchhaya into a living spiritual entity is the omnipresence of Shrinathji, the deity closest to the hearts of the clients. Be it through the artifacts adorning the walls, delicately embroidered textiles, symbolic murals, or sculptural insertions- Shrinathji’s presence is subtle yet omnipotent. Each room becomes an offering, an experience, a philosophy, a living prayer. With every material choice, every carved edge, every drop of light and every colour stroke, the bungalow is proof that architecture, when aligned with soul and symbolism, can echo divinity and turn a house into a hymn.

In Devchhaya, blessings don’t just reside- they breathe, speak and embrace.
