Designing a home is not just about creating a space—it’s about crafting an experience that reflects the personality of its inhabitants while balancing aesthetics with functionality and sustainability. This project, a private residential bungalow located in Ahmedabad, India, stands as a testament to that philosophy. Designed for a family of four, the space merges contemporary architectural techniques with earthy, natural materials, creating a home that is both elegant and functional.

The project highlights an interplay & is a celebration of exposed materials -brick, concrete, and lush greenery, making it a striking addition to its urban surroundings. The facade is defined by a bold geometric composition of exposed red brick and raw concrete, reflecting a timeless, earthy palette. The horizontal lines of the cantilevered slabs and balconies enhance the visual appeal, while the strategic integration of vertical elements adds depth and balance. The facade's open, clean design ensures natural light and ventilation permeate the structure, creating a sustainable and energy-efficient home.

The lush plantations at the base provides a vibrant contrast to the raw materials, softening the structure's modern lines and bringing nature into close proximity with the living spaces. Tropical plants and carefully selected greenery wrap the house, adding a sense of serenity and privacy. A shaded pathway lined with palm trees and natural stone flooring emphasizes the connection between indoor and outdoor environments. Since the site doesn’t offer extensive landscaping opportunities, we focused on creating green connections within the home itself. The courtyards and OTS planters introduce lush greenery that visually divides the spaces while enhancing the atmosphere with natural light and fresh air.

Dense trees and shrubs are strategically placed in the compound wall planters, ensuring that the home feels connected to nature even in the absence of large outdoor spaces. The design’s seamless integration of outdoor elements helps create a refreshing environment that brings the outdoors indoors. The bungalow’s design is built around the idea of openness, connectivity, and personalization. It features a bold, rectangular mass that was softened and enlivened by the introduction of strategic punctures in the form of courtyards, open-to-sky planters (OTS), and large fenestrations. These elements allow light to permeate deep into the interior while also visually separating the different spaces, enhancing the spatial experience.

One of the most significant design principles was ensuring that every room had its own vibe, reflecting the personalities of the family members, yet maintaining a sense of cohesion throughout the entire house. The interior design of the bungalow follows an earthy, warm palette that creates a sense of grounding and serenity. Bricks, wood, leather, and fabric in soft, muted tones form the primary material selection, chosen to evoke comfort and simplicity. The result is a space where natural textures blend seamlessly with modern design elements.

Each room tells its own story, yet all spaces maintain a connecting design language that links them into one harmonious whole. From formal living spaces to intimate family zones, every corner of this home is carefully curated to feel both unique and part of a cohesive whole.

The heart of the bungalow is its expansive formal living area, where design meets functionality in an ambiance of understated opulence. Adding visual intrigue to the space, the wooden ceiling panel contrasts beautifully with the polished stone flooring and soft area rugs. This interplay of textures lends a rich, layered feel to the living area, while warm, diffused lighting creates an inviting atmosphere in the evenings.

The adjacent informal living area separated by an OTS court, a bold contrast to the neutral tones of the formal living space, features vibrant terracotta-hued curved sofas. This section offers a playful yet sophisticated alternative seating arrangement, designed to encourage informal gatherings.

The Dining space seamlessly integrates with the family living area and the kitchen, reflecting the bungalow's open-plan design ethos. It is seamlessly connected to an open-to-sky coffee court, blurring the lines between interior and exterior. The design fosters a sense of openness and fluidity, perfect for hosting intimate family meals or larger gatherings.. Above, delicate pendant lights add a contemporary touch, while a backdrop of earthy wooden cabinetry in the kitchen enhances the space’s warmth. The kitchen has a minimalist design approach, featuring clean lines, stone countertops, and black and wood finishes for a cohesive aesthetic.
