Set within a one-acre plot in the lush Konkan region of Maharashtra, this farmhouse was designed in harmony with its surroundings. The land came with a serene natural character—scattered with banana groves, local fruit-bearing trees, and an existing water well. A small, beautiful temple also stood on-site, lending the place a quiet spiritual energy. Instead of altering the landscape, the design grew around these elements—respecting the terrain, preserving the vegetation, and embracing the existing features as part of the architectural story.

The 2,400 sq. ft. home draws deeply from local traditions while offering the comforts of contemporary living. The design is grounded in the vernacular style—making thoughtful use of materials like laterite stone, clay roof tiles, and wooden elements, all of which speak to the rich heritage of the region.

Sloping roofs clad in red clay tiles not only pay homage to the traditional Konkan aesthetic but also serve a practical purpose—channeling heavy monsoon rains with ease and providing insulation during hot, humid months. The laterite stone walls, sourced locally, bring in thermal mass, helping regulate indoor temperatures naturally.

At the heart of the farmhouse sits an open-to-sky courtyard—an essential element of traditional Konkan homes. It connects all the rooms, bringing in natural light and ventilation while offering a calm, open space for relaxation and daily spillover activities. From here, one can also glimpse the adjacent small temple, adding a quiet spiritual presence to the home.

Further down the corridor are two master bedrooms that reflect a continued dedication to climate-conscious design—featuring built-in bed bases, traditional stone flooring, and large windows that double as reading nooks. Ornate wooden railings and handcrafted details echo the artisanal spirit of the region.

This farmhouse doesn’t just sit on the land—it belongs to it. Every material, form, and finish was chosen to blend seamlessly with the Konkan landscape, resulting in a home that feels as natural as the coastal breeze and as enduring as the monsoon-washed laterite it’s built from.
