Nestled in the serene village of Kakkodi, Calicut, “Malhar” is a residence designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. Set on a 50-cent plot overlooking lush paddy fields, the home draws inspiration from the rhythm of a raga—flowing seamlessly through space, light, and materiality.

The design prioritizes a deep connection to nature, achieved through organic materials and spatial openness. Brick Jali provide a delicate balance between ventilation, natural light, and privacy, while elements like natural granite, exposed ceilings, and sloping roofs further root the home in its environment.

A thoughtfully landscaped, stepped pathway leads visitors to the main house, which is elevated 1.5 meters above the entrance yard to preserve the site's existing terrain and enhance the visual prominence of the entry facade. Positioned away from the main road, the house enjoys privacy and a quiet buffer from external disturbances, with a curved driveway orchestrating a gradual and elegant reveal.

Central to the design are two courtyards—anchoring the spatial arrangement and regulating the transition from public to private zones. The sit-out, living, and family spaces are arranged linearly around these green pockets, offering layered degrees of privacy while maintaining visual and spatial continuity. A private courtyard, designed around an existing Tamarind tree, creates a green sanctuary for the kitchen, bedrooms, and family living area. These courtyards double as shared and private realms, particularly supporting the client's work-from-home lifestyle with tranquil, adaptable spaces.

The ascending roof forms follow the site’s natural contours, reinforcing a hierarchy in built mass and enhancing spatial drama. A spiral staircase serves as a sculptural element, connecting the ground level to upper bedrooms and a home theater, which opens onto a generous terrace designed for leisure and gatherings. Malhar is a reflection of thoughtful planning—balancing openness with intimacy, and nature with architecture. Every spatial decision is rooted in the occupant’s needs, ensuring comfort, functionality, and a profound sense of peace.
