Mrudugandha is a beautiful word of Sanskrit origin, deeply poetic and sensory in nature. It refers to a soft, subtle, and soothing fragrance —the earthy aroma that rises from the soil after the first rain, known as petrichor in English. Nestled within the vibrant bustle of Pune city, this 3 BHK apartment captures that same essence — a quiet retreat that evokes calm, nostalgia, and a profound connection to our roots. It is a word that speaks not only to the senses, but also to the soul.

Born from a young couple’s deep connection to their heritage, the concept of Mrudugandha draws inspiration from the enduring legacy of traditional Maharashtrian Wada architecture. They envisioned a home where every wall whispers stories of their roots, and every corner reflects traditions passed down through generations. At its heart was a desire to honour the valour, vision, and legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

With their aspirations in mind, we envisioned a space where history and modern living coexist effortlessly—where their children grow up surrounded by symbols of the great Maratha warriors, and where future generations remain deeply connected to the legacy that shaped their lineage. This home stands as a gentle reminder that heritage is not merely remembered—it is lived, every single day. The design seamlessly weaves cultural richness with the ease and elegance of modern living, creating a home that celebrates nostalgia, tradition, and identity without compromising contemporary functionality or comfort.

The entrance is a thoughtful homage to Maharashtrian tradition, adorned with intricate detailing and a custom nameplate crafted in the symbolic form of the Raj Mudra. Stepping inside, the living room unfolds as a heartfelt tribute to classic Wada aesthetics, where tradition and warmth set the tone for the home. A striking stone-clad feature wall anchors the space, adorned with hand-painted portraits of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Behind the sofa, a monochromatic backdrop is delicately detailed with intricate mandala art, adding depth and quiet elegance to the living area.

The balcony adjoining the living area becomes a contemporary extension of the traditional aangan, featuring a beautifully crafted stone Tulsi Vrindavan in warm terracotta tones—reminiscent of old Maharashtrian courtyards. This space gently bridges indoor comfort with outdoor serenity, echoing the essence of rooted living within a modern setting.

Balancing this cultural richness is a sleek, modern marble dining table—seamlessly blending tradition and contemporary design with understated sophistication. The kitchen continues this dialogue between past and present. Finished in calming sage green, the cabinetry is accentuated with fluted glass shutters, lending a vintage yet light and airy appeal.

Adding a layer of nostalgia, old brass jars filled with fragrant nishigandha flowers introduce a delicate scent and timeless charm into the heart of the home.

Traditional niches inspired by Wada architecture are thoughtfully carved into the walls beside the Devghar and adjacent to the dining area, showcasing miniature sculptures of Mavala warriors. These elements evoke a profound sense of pride and historical resonance.

The master bedroom is designed to radiate serene grandeur. A bold teal arch frames the bed’s backdrop, contrasted by subtle greyscale tropical wallpaper that adds depth without overpowering the space. Natural rattan accents in the bed’s headboard and TV unit introduce a vernacular warmth, while a refined beige monochromatic palette enhances tranquillity and allows the teal feature to stand out as a statement of character.

Mrudugandha stands as a testament to the idea that design is more than structure—it is a vessel for memory, emotion, and lived experience. It embodies the belief that a home can be both a reflection of cultural legacy and a canvas for contemporary life. By harmonizing tradition with modernity, the design offers a space where each moment—whether quiet reflection, family gathering, or everyday routine—feels intentional, meaningful, and connected to something larger than oneself.

The home’s essence lies in its ability to evoke a sense of continuity: a bridge between generations, stories, and values, all while nurturing the individuality and evolving lifestyle of its inhabitants. Here, every choice—from scale and proportion to texture and light—serves a greater purpose, creating a narrative that resonates with the human experience.

In the end, Mrudugandha is more than bricks and mortar; it is an experience of rootedness and belonging. It reminds us that heritage is not simply preserved in memory, but can be actively lived, celebrated, and felt in daily life. The home captures a rare balance—honoring history, embracing the present, and inspiring a future where tradition and contemporary living exist in quiet, enduring harmony.
