The design philosophy of The Muthappa Residence revolves around meeting their clients’ fundamental needs with elegance and simplicity. Their primary focus was on harnessing natural light and airflow, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and air conditioning. To achieve this, they centered the layout of the house around a courtyard positioned to capture the eastern sun, creating a luminous core for the residence. Complemented by strategically placed open spaces throughout, this design ensures ample cross ventilation, creating a naturally comfortable environment. The other key requirement from their clients was ample open space for their children to play. The courtyard along with the smaller pockets of open spaces caters to this requirement as well.

The circulation of the spaces have been turned into a very pleasant experience as one moves through a series of double and single floor heights. Starting with the foyer from where one starts to see a glimpse of the courtyard, the ground floor houses a double height formal living room that is visible from the office room on the first floor, a dining and dry kitchen that has the courtyard on one side and a quaint sit out on the other side. The dining room then leads to the guest bedroom and the wet kitchen.

The first floor hosts a spacious family room with skylights, overlooking the courtyard below, while the master bedroom, children’s rooms, and office encircle this communal space. Finally, the second floor features a cozy terrace attached to a bar, a library, and a larger terrace garden.
Overall, the Architecture ensures that the courtyard on the ground floor remains seamlessly integrated with all the common areas of the house. From the formal living and dining areas to the dry and wet kitchens, family room, and even the balconies and terrace gardens across all floors, every space offers a clear view of the courtyard.

The Interior Design of this residence is truly a reflection of the clients’ personality - simplicity and finesse. The clients wanted us to make sure that their traditional roots were maintained through the choice of materials, keeping in mind a rather minimalistic approach. This led to the use of subtle yet powerful Kota flooring, teak wood doors and windows, terracotta and fabric light fixtures and so on. A lot of the furniture have been meticulously designed, detailed and built on site and others are thoughtfully curated solid wood furniture.
