Nibhrite — meaning “in solitude” in Bengali — evokes a sense of stillness and personal retreat amidst the bustle of Kolkata. The project draws inspiration from fusing nostalgic elements of the city’s aesthetics with contemporary design. The apartment, situated on the 24th floor of a prominent gated community, is owned by a family of three. The brief was to declutter and optimise the existing four-bedroom layout, which included a servant’s quarter.

With a built-up area of 3,866 sq. ft., the linear layout was reconfigured to create spatial sequences that felt cohesive and intuitive. A muted grey palette, accent colours, natural light, wooden rafters, rattan weave, and sensitive landscaping, composes a carefully curated mise-en-scène. The client envisioned a home that felt connected and deeply personal—where everyone had their own private space, yet could come together in a common area to unwind.

An open kitchen was designed with a built-in burner and a wooden slab serving as a breakfast counter. The adjoining dining area, anchored by a concrete-topped table, extends towards the uthan (central court), where a two-way swing knits the spaces together, enhancing the inviting atmosphere. The master bedroom, with its micro-topped floor, teak poster bed, and wooden rafters, carries a distinct sense of nostalgia. Ergonomically designed teak furniture, intricately woven rattan, and brass accents further enrich this charm.

Overall, the existing layout was turned into a three-bedroom configuration, with walls deliberately left uncluttered, devoid of wall shelves and panels. At any point, one encounters the combination of concrete and wood—Nibhrite, in essence.
