PURVABHASA: Resonance of the Past

The transformation of a 30-year-old cow shed into a guest house is a symphony of elements, where old and new coalesce in a dance of raw and refined aesthetics. Their renovated house stands as a testament to the elegance of adaptive reuse—an ode to the past and an invitation to embrace the present in a uniquely enchanting setting.

The project’s vision was rooted in preserving the soul of the original structure while infusing it with modern functionality and design sensibilities. The commitment to retaining the base of the old foundation and walls is evident from the moment you lay eyes on the house. The structure's grid remains undisturbed, with the original walls, weathered by time and tales, standing proudly as a testament to the building’s history.

A defining architectural elements of this transformation is the floating sloping roof. In a daring design choice, the roof has been gently lifted off the walls, creating an illusion of levitation, a feat made possible by a robust steel frame that not only supports the roof but also cradles it, allowing for an interplay of light and shadow that enhances the building's aesthetic appeal. The roof’s design strikes a perfect balance between tradition and innovation, its gentle slope reminiscent of vernacular architecture while its floating nature brings a modern twist to the visual narrative.

A simple yet inviting entrance leads into a serene courtyard, which forms the heart of the guest house. Here, the design ethos is all about simplicity and tranquility. The courtyard floor is adorned with rough, tactile tiles that add a rustic touch to the ambiance. Above, a well-placed skylight serves as the crown jewel of the courtyard, inviting natural light to cascade into the space. As sunlight filters through, it creates a dynamic play of shadows, adding depth and dimension to the serene setting.

The interiors of the guest house blend rustic charm with modern design elements. Earthy tones and minimalistic furnishings create an ambiance that is cozy & elegant. Natural materials such as wood and stone contribute to a grounded, organic feel. The decor remains understated yet thoughtful, with each piece chosen to complement the overall design narrative. The floating roof adds to the sense of openness, ensuring that natural light filters into the space.

Seamlessly merging with the surrounding landscape, the guest house extends its charm outdoors. Weathered boulders act as natural accents, grounding the design in its environment. The outdoor space is a curated experience, featuring a fire pit surrounded by seating that encourages conversation and relaxation. A stylish deck with ceramic tiles bridges the indoor and outdoor spaces, offering a serene spot for unwinding. This blend of heritage & modernity creates a retreat where guests can reflect on the past while indulging in the comforts of the present.

A poetic fusion of past and present, transforming an old cow shed with a modern steel frame that elevates its sloping roof, seamlessly blending heritage with modernity to create a space for both reflection and relaxation.
