Puducherry (earlier Pondicherry) is one of the few serene coastal Indian cities that gives you French feels by all means. Although the colonial-era French are long gone, they’ve left behind their legacy in shapes and forms beyond neatly paved rues, heritage mansions, and chic boutiques. The city is a melting pot of art, architecture, cultures and cuisines with diverse influences — a fusion of Tamil and French. Much like the architecture, where, despite having distinct quarters, the east and west parts of the old town have shared and borrowed design elements from each other. Similarly, over the years, the French and Tamil flavours have blended harmoniously. This Tamil-Franco fare, better known as Creole cuisine, has restaurants and homes alike swapping traditional Indian spices for quintessential French ingredients and vice versa.

This project, a compact 2 bedroom apartment located in one of the most picturesque streets of the French quarter of Puducherry, a few streets away from the beach, is a blend of the french minimalism and the influence of tamil local craft and art. The project is named after the desi version of ‘Bouillabaisse’, a classic French seafood stew from the port town of Marseille. The dish is a culinary exchange that retains French cooking techniques, while keeping the spice and tangy flavours of Tamilian cuisine intact.

I grew up in Pondicherry and one of the first things that grabs everyone’s attention is the French spelling of Indian names. An example, people being named as Mr Callianasoundarame, Mr. Seyasangarane. In case those names seem complicated, these are the French spellings of the Tamil names: Kalyanasundaram and Jayasankaran. And that's exactly how The Bouillabaisse had transformed into a Puyabaisse and eventually as the project title as well.

The design is anchored in the principles of openness, light, and material honesty, creating a calm and grounded atmosphere that balances function with aesthetics. The living room is visually expanded by the large internal Open to Sky on one side, acting as a breathing space that seamlessly connects nature with the indoors. Its full-height glass openings ensure a constant play of daylight throughout the day, reducing dependency on artificial lighting and creating an ever-changing ambience. The living space depicted reflects a refined architectural language that merges modern French minimalism with traditional Indian undertones.

A neutral palette dominated by whites and soft beiges forms the canvas of the space. This understated colour scheme allows natural light to bounce effortlessly across the surfaces, amplifying the sense of space and serenity. A layer of richness and cultural rootedness is added through the strategic use of natural wood -seen in the window frames, door, and custom furniture. The furniture is thoughtfully curated with a blend of clean-lined modern pieces and Indian craftsmanship, as seen in the woven cane detailing and solid wood elements.

The spatial arrangement of the dining area and open pantry is thoughtfully conceived to encourage social interaction and visual openness. Positioned adjacent to the kitchen and living areas, this zone acts as a seamless transition between private and public functions within the home.

A harmonious palette of warm wood, textured weaves, and matte blacks defines the character of this space. The built-in cabinetry in deep-toned teak wood sets a grounded, earthy tone while contributing to ample concealed storage. The cane-backed chairs paired with indigo blue upholstered seats add visual contrast and echoes the project's vision - vernacular Indian craftsmanship on a French minimal canvas.

The kitchen offers a highly functional yet delightful environment tailored for modern everyday cooking. The material and colour palette is a defining feature of this kitchen. Muted sage green lower cabinets paired with warm white uppers create a refreshing, two-tone combination that is both calming and modern. This combination visually grounds the base of the kitchen while making the upper areas feel light and spacious.

The master bedroom exudes quiet sophistication through a thoughtful blend of minimal design, natural textures, and a richly layered palette. The layout is intentionally kept open and uncluttered, with essential furniture pieces and ample breathing space, evoking a sense of quiet luxury. The wooden bed, crafted in solid timber with a natural grain finish, anchors the space with warmth and stability. The bed linen in off-white is softly quilted with subtle patterns, providing delicate texture, while the deep navy blue cushions and throw add a dramatic contrast. A traditional patterned dhurrie rug brings a touch of Indian craft and softens the flooring, adding comfort and cultural layering.

The Guest bedroom is a thoughtfully curated blend of comfort, craft, and contextual sensitivity. A muted, earthy palette anchors the room—built around tones of ochre, beige, and soft wood. The wardrobe forms a strong design statement, finished in a beige tone with rattan cane inserts sandwiched between glass. The ethnic handwoven cushions with tribal motifs in earthy reds, ochres, and greys become key accents that tie the space to Tamil craft traditions. These patterns not only add visual richness but also lend a personalized and cultural character to the room.
