Riverside Residence was guided by several factors: minimal excavation, level balance, optimal views, and a touch of traditional Kerala. Capturing Kerala's essence involved space arrangement, scene framing, earthy materials, traditional elements, and natural light. The selected color palette and finishes aimed to mirror Kerala's intrinsic spirit.

Commissioned by an NRI client, who spent 30 years in the Middle East, the project aimed to create a home that not only offered solace by the flowing river but also evoked the cherished memories of his childhood home in Kerala, India. Nestled beside a tranquil river, the challenge was to create a sanctuary that seamlessly merged Kerala's traditional architectural elements with the client's modern lifestyle, all while paying homage to the natural beauty surrounding the site. The brief was to have a 4 bedroom home for this family of grandparents, parents and two boys. The home should have a connection to the street and to the river.  All the living areas and 2 bedrooms have to be in one level for the ease of the Parents.

The primary design challenge involved preserving the existing structure on the contour site, where the client's parents resided. Maximizing the remaining area dictated the formation of an L-shaped basic structure. The site was at a level of 1.5m below the road and then sloping backward towards the river. The entry level was placed at a height of 1.5m above the road level. This established a visual connection from front patio to the road where all the neighborly communication happens, given the rural context. This also gave an opportunity to tuck a floor below it minimizing the alteration of existing contours. Here we have a partially indoor and outdoor basement patio, providing a secluded space for entertainment, ensuring complete privacy while enjoying both a riverside and courtyard view. Ultimately, the existing structure was demolished, which later turned out to be the open courtyard and providing access to the river at the rear, establishing a seamless connection from the road to the river , guiding the journey from the road to tranquil waterside.

The residence interior draws inspiration from Kerala's rich tradition, incorporating architectural elements in furniture, wall finishes, and materials. Furniture predominantly features reclaimed wood with fabric accents. Wall finishes employ yellow and grey shades of cement and lime plaster. Lapatro finish tiles and patterned tiles inspired by handmade Athangudi tiles adorn the space.

Our approach integrates site-specific strategies for sustainability and functional efficiency. The building aligns with natural contours to minimize earthworks, respecting the landscape. Innovations include resolving elevation differences between road and river levels seamlessly throughout the project, both indoors and outdoors.

Material selection prioritizes local resources such as reclaimed wood for almost all interior elements like ceilings and furniture, alongside locally sourced stones like laterite and granite for construction and facades, enhancing contextual integration. Skylights and lofty ceilings optimize natural daylight, reducing dependence on artificial lighting during daytime hours. Solar panels on terrace patio roofs contribute significantly to energy generation while mitigating Roof heat gain. Rainwater harvesting and reduced paved surfaces further underscore our commitment to environmental stewardship. The design fosters direct engagement with the street and river, promoting community interaction and a sense of place.
