Satva is a compact residence designed for a family of three within a dense 5 cent urban plot, surrounded closely by neighboring houses and accessible only from the front road. The design responds to these constraints through an introverted spatial strategy that maximizes buildable area while ensuring privacy, comfort, and a strong connection with nature.

The client’s requirement for a three bedroom home with two bedrooms on the ground floor and parking for two cars significantly influenced the planning. To accommodate parking within the limited site, transitional spaces such as a conventional entry verandah were omitted. Privacy from adjacent plots was achieved by raising the compound walls to lintel height, creating a protective boundary that transforms the house into a calm internal retreat.

Within this enclosure, landscaped green pockets were introduced along the side setbacks, functioning as visual and environmental buffers. Large openings from the living and dining areas extend into these pockets, allowing natural light and ventilation to enhance the spatial experience while maintaining a sense of openness within the constrained footprint.

A key architectural gesture is the continuation of the sloping first floor roof into the ground floor living space, subtly creating a double height volume that enhances spatial quality without imposing scale. The two ground floor bedrooms are arranged alongside a shared courtyard, which acts as a private transitional space between them. Both bedrooms open into this courtyard, fostering a serene and intimate environment.

The courtyard is enclosed with a brick jali screen on the western side and topped with a skylight, allowing filtered daylight to penetrate deep into the house while reducing harsh solar heat gain. The perforated brick screen encourages cross ventilation and creates dynamic patterns of light and shadow that animate the interior spaces while improving thermal comfort.

The interior palette is intentionally minimal, using wooden furniture, white non putty finished walls, and white terrazzo flooring to enhance brightness and spatial perception. The terracotta tiled sloping roof reinforces regional material character while improving climatic performance. An existing well on the site was partially retained and integrated into the planning, balancing preservation with spatial optimization.

The ground floor accommodates the living and dining areas, kitchen, work area, and two bedrooms, ensuring functional convenience and accessibility. The first floor includes an additional bedroom, study, upper living space, an open balcony at the front and a multipurpose room that allows flexibility for evolving family needs.

Constructed as a load bearing laterite structure, Satva minimizes the use of concrete, reflecting a commitment to sustainability, material authenticity, and contextual design. The house ultimately transforms spatial limitations into a peaceful inward sanctuary that celebrates light, ventilation, and simplicity.
