A three-generation home in Sambhajinagar, designed by AR Associates, is a lyrical ode to legacy, leisure, and layered living.

Set within Sambhajinagar’s vibrant cultural tapestry, this three-generation family home orchestrates a thoughtful interplay between tradition and modernity. AR Associates began the journey by honoring the original, two-decade-old bungalow, even as they reimagined it for the present day. The result is a refined synthesis of neoclassical poise and contemporary clarity, all harmoniously aligned with Vaastu principles. This home isn’t just an architectural intervention, it is a memory made permanent. A revival that pays homage to its origins while stepping gracefully into the now.

The intent from the very beginning was crystal clear: to preserve what came before while gently guiding it into the future. "The design reinterprets the traditional exterior through a neoclassical lens, timeless, elegant, and understated,” explain the architect duo from AR Associates. Rather than stripping away the old, they chose to build upon it. Every decision was made with respect for the memories held within the walls, while crafting new layers of meaning for the next generation. This vision, executed within an ambitious 18-month schedule, demanded not just efficiency, but deep sensitivity. Every molding, tile, and joint was meticulously planned, long before the first brick was laid.

The journey through the home begins with an open double-height staircase, anchored by a hand-carved teak main door that serves as the home's vertical spine. This entry moment is not just grand, but grounding; it sets the emotional tone. It fosters clear visual connections between the floors, allowing the family to remain connected across levels. Upon entering, a custom Vitthal‑Rukmini artwork immediately infuses the lobby with a sense of spiritual and cultural grounding, an aesthetic nod to the family’s roots.

To the right, the living room bathes in gentle natural light streaming in through expansive windows. It’s a space where moments are both shared and savored, crowned by a sculptural white chandelier that hangs like a floating cloud, quiet yet impactful. The design strikes a delicate balance between communal warmth and serene quietude, making it a room where the family comes together, but also finds stillness.

Seamlessly connected to this is the puja space, which flows intuitively into the dining area. Here, a curved Italian marble-top dining table becomes the heart of many conversations, meals, and shared laughter. “We wanted to create a layout that felt fluid where rituals and routines could happen naturally,” says the architect. The materials reflect this harmony. The crockery unit and kitchen were crafted to match the preferences, spaces built not just for show, but for use, every single day.

The ground floor is intimately connected to the outdoors, with lush landscaping by Innovative Design Associates weaving through the built footprint. Tropical greens soften the edges of the architecture, framing views and offering a pause. The garden doesn’t just decorate, it heals. A swimming pool, designed to delight two generations of aquatic enthusiasts, is a central anchor of leisure. It isn’t just functional, it’s ritualistic.

“The father and son share a deep love for swimming. The pool became more than a design feature; it became a part of their daily rhythm,” the architect duo shares.

Throughout the home, a warm and tactile palette of Italian marble, teakwood, and natural veneers creates a sense of understated luxury. Light-toned walls and refined ceiling moldings evoke classical elegance while allowing the interiors to feel fresh and breathable. The staircase stands as a sculptural centerpiece, visually stitching together the different parts of the home. Above, the first-floor slab is flat-roofed, while the second floor introduces a butterfly-shaped sloping roof, dramatically enhancing the volumetric height at the center. This isn’t just aesthetic; it lends the
home a dynamic and uplifting internal energy.

On the first floor, three personalized bedrooms unfold, each designed as a private sanctuary for its occupant. While distinct in material and tone, they’re united in their quiet luxury. A shared home theatre becomes a communal pause point where generations meet not just in movie nights, but in shared memories.

The home also smartly tucks away practical zones, parking, a home office, and staff quarters are placed in quiet corners, so that they support, but never intrude. The architecture is allowed to breathe.

But what truly sets this residence apart is not just the balance in its materials or form; it is the way it holds both memory and modernity, equally and with grace. It is a home where grandparents rise to the sound of temple bells, where children race through corridors lined with heritage carvings, and where every room has its own story to tell.

This project does more than renovate; it redefines what it means to update a home. By reweaving family tradition with neoclassical finesse and contemporary vision, AR Associates has created something lasting. A residence that feels like it’s always been there, yet somehow, entirely new.

This home is a living canvas, each material, every threshold, narrates a rhythm of daily life that is both rooted in heritage and crafted with care for tomorrow.
