Some buildings reveal themselves at once. This studio was conceived to do the opposite. Set nearly ninety feet back from the road, the project transforms the act of arrival into the defining architectural experience. Rather than relying on visibility from the street, it unfolds gradually through a sequence of landscape, water, filtered light, and interconnected spaces.

A landscaped passage then guides visitors inward, with dense planting along the edges and a cascading water wall positioned at the threshold of the studio. The sound of flowing water gradually replaces the noise of the street, creating a sensory transition before one enters the building. Overhead, the slatted pergola filters light throughout the day, casting shifting bands of shadow across the floors, walls, and landscape. The changing light conditions animate the entire threshold space, making it feel different from one hour to the next. Together, water, landscape, and filtered light transform the arrival sequence into a gradual transition between the city and the studio.

Placed within this corridor is an ancestral sagwan bench that has remained in the family for nearly 150 years. Over time, it naturally became one of the most occupied spaces in the office, used for informal conversations, morning chai, waiting between meetings, and moments of pause throughout the day.

What was initially conceived as a transitional zone slowly evolved into a shared social space for the studio. Team lunches spill into it, chess boards appear on quieter afternoons, and impromptu games occasionally take over the corridor. Rather than assigning rigid functions, the space was designed with openness and informality, allowing it to adapt organically to everyday studio life.

Inside, the material palette remains intentionally restrained, comprising muted plaster walls, warm wood tones, soft greys, and natural stone surfaces. The interiors were designed to remain visually quiet, allowing light, shadow, landscape, and framed views to become the primary spatial elements.

The waiting lounge flows directly into the discussion area, which has emerged as the heart of the office. Positioned between the staff workspace, landscape court, and cabins, it allows different parts of the studio to remain visually connected to one another.

Transparency became an important principle throughout the workspace. All cabins were designed with glass partitions to maintain visual continuity across the office. From almost every corner, one remains connected to the courtyard, pergola shadows, movement through the studio, and layers of adjoining spaces. Large openings and glazed partitions maintain a continuous relationship with the entrance court, allowing views of the pergola, planting, and water feature to remain part of the everyday experience of the workspace.

At the quieter end of the studio sits the principal cabin, anchored by a backlit library displaying books, drawings, and collected objects accumulated over the years. More than a formal workspace, it functions as a small archive of references and memories tied to the practice.

Throughout the project, the intention was not to create a studio that announces itself immediately. Instead, the office reveals itself gradually through landscape, water, filtered light, framed views, and quiet transitions, creating a workplace shaped as much by atmosphere and daily occupation as by architecture itself.
