Thamarai, is a South Indian tropical modern residence situated in Tirupur, Tamil Nadu. The architectural vocabulary of this residence blends traditional characters with minimalistic contemporary elements, reflecting the family’s requirement. The Family is based in Tiruppur with a textile industry background. The site’s context and the functionality were the primary design priorities, which were addressed with a traditional and symmetrical approach. Given the 30 cent plot and a built-up area of 15,000 sqft, solving interiors and working on exterior elevations was a challenging task with the limitation of the shell being built.

Considering cross ventilation and lighting as key factors, unwanted walls have been removed creating better spaces. The introduction of a center courtyard with a glass roof, maximized natural light and facilitated air circulation. This space which acts as the center connect of the house also brought in a traditional and cultural aesthetic to the interiors. The three elements that make up the front façade of the house are: - A brick facade service unit on the southside that shields the residential unit from direct sunlight and thereby bringing in diffused light and optimal ventilation. - The usage of exposed concrete in the front elevation helped to enhance the rustic architecture feel. - A lush tropical vegetation that envelops the residence. To adapt to the local climate, the building incorporates the usage of sustainable materials like wood joineries, terracotta ceilings, natural stone flooring and natural material wall claddings.

The interior features a monochromatic palette of white clean walls, wood joineries and muted flooring but the careful usage of contrast materials like yellow Jaisalmer, brass handrails and printed terrazzo tiles brought in a balanced contrast to this theme. All the materials are left in its natural character, demonstrating that a modern family living can be achieved sustainably while adapting to the local context. The deck and balcony spaces offer a connection between the exterior garden and the interiors.
