The Gazebo is a contemporary single-family residence located in Kalamassery, Kochi, within a quiet residential neighborhood characterized by low-rise houses, narrow internal streets, and abundant tropical vegetation. The surrounding context reflects a typical suburban fabric of Kerala, where privacy, greenery, and climatic responsiveness play an important role in residential design. The site offered an opportunity to create a modern home that integrates seamlessly with its environment while maintaining a distinct architectural identity.

The client’s brief emphasized the need for a functional, comfortable, and visually refined home that supports a modern lifestyle. Key requirements included ample natural light, efficient spatial planning, and strong indoor-outdoor connectivity. In response, the design approach focused on simplicity, openness, and spatial clarity, ensuring that every area of the house serves a clear purpose while contributing to the overall living experience.

The primary inspiration for the project emerged from the idea of creating a semi-open leisure space that encourages interaction with the surroundings. This concept materialized in the form of the signature circular projecting balcony, conceived as a gazebo. This sculptural element extends outward from the main structure and becomes the defining feature of the residence. It functions as a space for relaxation and observation while establishing a strong visual identity for the façade.

One of the most important design elements in the project is this circular balcony, supported by a slender column and framed by minimal railings. Its geometry contrasts with the rectilinear form of the building, creating a dynamic architectural expression. Additionally, the integration of a compact internal patio enhances natural ventilation and daylight while bringing greenery into the core of the house.

A major challenge during the project was integrating curved forms, cantilevered elements, and projecting spaces within a compact residential plot while maintaining structural stability and cost efficiency. Careful coordination between architectural design, structural planning, and on-site execution ensured the accurate realization of these features without compromising functionality.

The residence is constructed using a reinforced concrete frame structure, complemented by steel railings, large glazed openings, and natural wood finishes. Materials were selected for durability, visual consistency, and climatic suitability. Flooring, lighting, and interior finishes were chosen to reinforce the minimalist aesthetic and enhance spatial continuity.

Spatially, the house is organized around an open living and dining core, visually connected to the staircase, patio, and upper-level circulation spaces. Private areas such as bedrooms are positioned to ensure privacy while maintaining visual links with outdoor elements. Large openings, skylights, and strategically placed windows promote cross-ventilation and reduce dependence on artificial lighting.
