Located on the 21st floor of a housing complex in Pune, this 3-bedroom apartment offers a unique design challenge due to its linear layout, which provides diverse views. The architects aimed to capitalize on these views through a strategic reconfiguration of the developer’s layout, establishing a central axis around which the client’s brief was organized. This central axis, affectionately referred to as the “Sadak” सड़क (street in Hindi) during the construction phase, served as the design’s backbone.

The apartment's aesthetic is defined by the rugged and natural beauty of blue-grey Indian Kota stone flooring, which establishes a neutral and grounding mood. The mirror finish of the floor, subtly enhanced by brass inlays and rough stone elements, reflects the geometric elegance of the Sadak, seamlessly integrating the apartment’s layout with its surroundings. Locally sourced artwork, strategically placed along the central street, adds a dramatic flair, infusing the space with a sense of cultural richness and identity. The thoughtful arrangement of ceilings, furniture, artwork, artifacts, and walls amplifies the linear effect of this central "street," creating a sense of openness and spaciousness that belies the compact nature of the apartment.

A significant transformation involved converting the servant bedroom into a library, which also functions as a study alcove. Sleek slatted wood doors integrate this space with the living area when open and convert it into an immersive work den when closed. Tucked smartly within the walls of this central axis lies a discreet “mandir” prayer nook, offering a serene and sacred space without disrupting the flow of the design. The project exemplifies minimalism and craftsmanship in every detail, from the wood and rattan fins separating the walk-in wardrobe from the master bedroom to the lime-plastered walls and ceilings in the living areas.

The semi-open kitchen also participates in the activities of the central street, fostering a sense of connection and engagement within the living space. This carefully crafted axis concludes with a striking Shiva sculpture and a strategically placed mirror, creating an infinity effect that extends the spatial experience and deepens the connection to the Sadak. The result is a harmonious and expansive living space that feels both timeless and serene, with every element thoughtfully integrated to enhance the overall experience.

A subtle blend of humble building materials, fine craftsmanship, custom art pieces, and artifacts creates a timeless atmosphere in this apartment centered along the Sadak.
