“Architecture is more than just constructing spaces; it is about shaping experiences and crafting environments that reflect individuality while addressing the nuances of daily life.” Says the principal architect. Designed by Architect Disha Patel & Jaymin Patel of J&D Architects, the luxury abode blurs the line between functionality with nature, inviting the outdoors into every corner of its thoughtfully composed space.

The firm has consistently redefined architectural boundaries, weaving together art, design, and functionality to create spaces that resonate deeply with those who inhabit them.

The Slate house is a linear rectangular plot located at Science city, Ahmedabad. The linearity gives us the perfect opportunity to explore design at various levels as it stretches across. The clients specified five bedrooms and a home theatre, leaving the rest in Patel's capable hands. The home was meant to house three generations—a young couple with a daughter and the grandparents. Clients had a modern taste with a brief to create it Vastu compliant.

The design ideology creates an interesting intermingling of the outdoors and the indoors. The thoughtful layout ensures that all the spaces have a stunning view of the outdoors. Right from the scale to the intricate details, everything is steeped in luxury.

The layout is a study in balance—while the open design encourages connection and interaction. The integration of outdoor verandas enhances this flow. The L-shaped footprint of the bungalow maximizes the ratio between built form and the surrounding landscape, to create a home with a quiet yet striking aesthetic. The design ensures that the spaces within the home are wrapped in lush greenery. The material palette is kept organic with the facade clad in natural granite, teak doors and large clear glass windows are used to impart a feeling of openness.

The journey into this architectural masterpiece begins with a thoughtfully designed approach plaza where every element serves both aesthetic and practical purposes. The parking and entrance step-way run parallel and is differentiated with planters, leading up to the entrance verandah.

The formal drawing room is elevated for a sense of grandeur, with expansive glass openings that frame and invite views of the garden. Weaving together contemporary luxury and textural warmth, the central living space is elevated by custom lighting, layered materials, and expansive glazing that dissolves the boundary between indoors and out.

The family living room, dining and kitchen are in an open plan compositions creating comfortable family gatherings. These are placed towards the north for a pleasant temperature throughout the day. The opening are bordered with large plantations adding a biophilic character to the space. The central veranda, facing east garden offers a tranquil spot to begin the day.

Bridging the ground and upper levels, a sculptural stairwell rises like a piece of art; equal parts structure and statement. At the core of the residence, the helical staircase rises as a centre masterpiece, an architectural element that is both functional and poetic. Seamlessly spiraling through the vertical volume of the building, it acts as a dynamic connector between floors while anchoring the spatial experience around it. “The grandeur and luxury of the stairwell allow it to become another experiential moment within the residence.” Says Ar. Disha.

The staircase ascends to the upper level, an inner sanctum that houses three bedrooms, and double height views that look back onto the ground floor below. The master suite unfolds with quiet grandeur, complete with a spacious en-suite, a walk-in wardrobe, and a private terrace balcony that extends the sense of calm outdoors. Each room is positioned to maximize natural light and ventilation, creating a calm and welcoming environment that balances personal space with a cohesive design language throughout the floor. Coming towards second floor, it is envisioned as a multifunctional recreational zone, designed to complement the home’s active and modern lifestyle.
