When Mrs. Mona Shah envisioned a home for her son, Deep Shah, she wanted it to feel familiar yet distinctly their own. The brief was rooted in a simple idea, to create a home that carried the warmth and cultural character of a traditional household while embracing the ease, openness and aesthetic of contemporary living. The design evolved from this dialogue between generations, between memories of the past and the lifestyle of the present.

This 4 BHK apartment with a service quarter in vadodra was conceived as a warm and inviting family home, where traditional references are subtly woven into a modern framework. Rather than recreating conventional Gujarati interiors, the approach was to reinterpret their essence through material, colour, craft and detailing.

Wood Veneer became one of the defining elements of the residence. Its rich tones bring depth and familiarity to the spaces, while a palette of ivory, beige, muted terracotta and earthy browns keeps the interiors contemporary and understated. Textured upholstery, patterned fabrics and handcrafted wall hangings in mirror and clay from bhuj add layers of warmth, allowing the home to feel collected and lived in rather than overly designed.

The living room carries the same conversation between old and new. Classical wall mouldings introduce a subtle traditional character, while a contemporary sectional, patterned lounge chairs and a sculptural coffee table create a relaxed setting for everyday life. Artwork, plants and carefully selected objects add personality, while the generous windows allow natural light to become an integral part of the interiors.

The dining area forms the social heart of the apartment. Designed with family gatherings in mind, it brings together a sculptural wooden dining table with Australian marble top, upholstered chairs, and a custom sideboard with an intricate geometric screen. The detailing recalls the patterned screens and crafted furniture often found in traditional Indian homes, while its clean execution gives it a contemporary expression. Tall, arched wooden display cabinets complete the setting, providing a place for crockery and cherished objects while becoming architectural features in their own right.

In the bedrooms, the palette becomes softer and more intimate. Timber battens, upholstered headboards, integrated bedside tables and warm lamps create a sense of continuity while allowing each room to have its own identity. Traditional warmth is expressed through wood, textiles and craftsmanship rather than overt ornamentation.

Every element was considered in response to the way the family imagined living in the home. Spaces were designed not simply to look beautiful, but to accommodate conversations, celebrations, quiet evenings and the everyday rituals of family life. Custom furniture and storage were integrated into the architecture, allowing functionality and aesthetics to exist seamlessly together.

Ultimately, the home is a reflection of a family’s connection to its roots and its evolving way of life. Mona Shah’s vision provided the foundation, while the design translated that vision into a home for the next generation, one where Gujarati warmth meets contemporary sensibility.
