During this period of uncertainty and fear, we are all spending large amounts of time locked down in our respective homes. A space that is always our final destination, a place where we find comfort after a tiring day, where we feel safe and a cocoon of sorts, to each their own. Today, more than ever, this holds true. We are all following the 'Stay home, Stay Safe' motto. It's the purpose, magnified in every sense. Homes are not just a place for us to nurture our future but a space that reflects our past and compliments our present. It allows us to be who we are and tells our story.

Colorplay is one such project which has its own life, it reflects the home owner's personality in every way. The brief was to keep it bright, colorful, and be a space that invokes 'JOY', hence the use of bright yet soothing colors and textures. A modern home that has a contemporary design and a comfortable vibe, ' A young home' were the words used by the owner’s to describe the space.

The clients were a young newly married couple, just starting their life together in the busy city of Mumbai; a city where the challenges we face as designers are unique to maximizing space utility, a city where dreams are larger and spaces are smaller. They wanted a place they would come home to after a busy day at work, running through time in the fast-paced life of an Indian Metropolis, space where they could pause and savor a moment of privacy and ease.

We decided to make the home full of bursts of color but with a subtlety of classy and underplayed minimalism. The entrance is a stark blue photo frame door that stands out within the veneer finished safety doors of other homes in the lift foyer, it is complemented with the white powder-coated wrought iron grill, showing a peak of the beautiful hand-polished pinewood main door to the inside. The use of blue helps you relax and calm your mind, it also reflects the joy with which this home was built, every detail mapped and measured.

The entrance foyer would need shoe cabinets, we designed the units with laser cut MDF grills finished in White Duco, this allows the shoes to breathe, maximizes storage and definitely makes a statement. It breaks from the monotony of console tables or half storage units that we see in most homes. The foyer leads to the living room which has a statement blue wall complimented with blue sofas & yellow piping, the color adds life to the dark hues used otherwise. The tables are made with metal and glass having a modern design to allow the place to look larger and feel more spacious. In Mumbai, the idea while designing a space includes maximizing storage, making optimum utilization of space and the illusion of the home looking larger, matchbox homes as they call it; our little piece of heaven in the maximum city.

The plan of the house had 4 doors opening into the living room, each leading to the two bedrooms, kitchen and common bathroom respectively. This makes the house feel smaller because the walls are covered in doors. We decided to camouflage 2 doors in a beautiful hand polished pine wood panel, that also in turn became the focal point in the living area and created a lovely backdrop for the dining table. A statement wall clock added direction to the visual interpretation of the space.

The bedrooms each have a distinct character and reflect the users of the space. The master bedroom has a neutral colour palette of grey and white, complimented with dark wooden flooring and veneer. It has bursts of colour in the form of upholstery, this allows flexibility to the user to change the look of the space conveniently. On the flip side the guest bedroom has a pastel colour palette with mint green and salmon pink being the base colours for the furniture and hints of white to compliment the same.

COLORPLAY is the definition of a modern home, a home that takes into account the monotony of everyday life and the hustle with long working hours but still surprises and invokes joy in the user. It's their space to make and stay the way they prefer and improvise at will.

A home that meets all their needs but doesn’t over power or clutter the need for personal space; minimalism weaved into contemporary design.
