Recent, growing built density and soaring land prices have compelled residents to abode matchbox houses devoid of desired light and ventilation. Akin to various Indian houses, this 20 years old residence is tucked in between residential apartments on all three sides. Demanding improved privacy measures as well as appropriate sunlight and air circulation.

The inherent closed planning is transformed to emanate from the outside. This is accomplished through the integration of outdoor and indoor spaces, indicatively broadening the relationship of formerly isolated open spaces to adjoining built spaces. In the majority of junctions there is no distinctly evident level difference framing a palpable separation, allowing to not just connect the spaces but extend and merge the designated portrayal assigned to them.

The living room was extended towards the front yard by altering the window previously only looking through, to now slide and fold to open the interiors seamlessly to the exterior. Similar approach for the windows in the backyard connected to the family room and kitchen has been implemented. The height of periphery walls was increased to cater for solitude, whilst niches and perforated concrete blocks allow selective visual connectivity. The prevailing marble tiles in flooring sit in contrast with the basalt tiles opted for the patios and kitchen flooring.

To further permit nature in, skylight is introduced above what was previously the informal seating. Allowing the sky to paint the tone of the house with the partition wall complimenting the setup with curvy and organic lines and shapes that remind of nature, provided with lime plastered walls. Natural brick cladding contributes to the ardour, extending from the living to the front yard. Micro Concrete enshrouds the pre-existing staircase, moulding the lines into curves in agreement with the entire composition. The staircase steps are extended towards the atria under the skylight transforming into outdoor seating and bending to shape the planters. The monochrome of the entire house is complemented with the warmth of light wooden furniture.

Even the sound of rain, the rustling of leaves in the wind, and the sound of birds chirping are incorporated into the design as components of a wholly organic frame. All the while ensuring the house remains immune to fads and trends, in harmony with its environment, and fulfilling the needs of its inhabitants.
