The neighborhood still has a community living aspect intact unlike newer gated communities of apartments and bungalows in the city. This aspect resulted in the house form emerging as one with visual connections from within to the street at various levels and physical connection through the ‘otalo’ on the ground floor and street facing balconies and openings on the first floor. The central double volume space is axially linear to the entrance and the staircase resulting in an active and connected central spine at the heart of the house.

The house is oriented with the street on the east, a community open space on the south and another house on the west. The north side has a common wall with the adjoining house – a twin house typology persistent in the neighborhood. To generate cross-ventilation, openings were provided on the West & South West side which would draw in air from the windward side flowing through the main spaces of the house and exit through the openings on the East & North East façade. A long verandah shades the south side which also opens out towards the common open space of the neighborhood. The west and east openings have deep overhangs or balconies for shading.
The material palette of the house comprises of limestone flooring from Kotah in the neighboring state of Rajasthan, Walls made from locally sourced debris bricks in plastered & textured finish and Exposed Concrete Slabs & Columns. The palette responds to the simplicity of the context and the clarity in the client’s brief. The palette also emerged from the way the spaces flow into each other and the volumetric composition of the built form. Overall the design addresses the contextual issues whilst continuing the lucidity of the existing fabric, at the same time forging a strong identity within the setting.
