‘Kalaśa’ — Echoes of Tulu Nadu
Weaving the hues of home into the calmness of Bengaluru

The clients came to us with a rare kind of enthusiasm, a longing to recreate the soul of Udupi within their Bengaluru home. They brought along heirlooms salvaged from their grandmother’s house, treasures weathered by coastal rains and winds, and asked that these memories be displayed with pride. Alongside this emotional brief came another layer of complexity: their deep commitment to Vaastu. Every room color, furniture position, and even voided corners were tied to individual gotras. We had never worked with such nuanced Vaastu directives, and the challenge sparked an immediate excitement.

The builder-given shell and the Vaastu constraints offered little room to manoeuvre, so we began by reshaping the space. The kitchen was opened into the living room, forming a more fluid heart of the home. Under the stairwell, we introduced an Udupi-style courtyard.  The jal moola became a neatly planned utility zone, and the expansive double height of the living area was reimagined with a warm guthu-inspired wooden ceiling, creating intimacy while making space for a bar on the first floor.

With the modified architecture setting the tone, we layered in materials and details that echo the ethos of Tulu Nadu. Yellow Jaisalmer flooring brings a gentle radiance throughout, with grooves marking transition zones. Laterite-clad walls envelop the home in an earthy familiarity. Contemporary custom furniture was designed to coexist seamlessly with the antique trunks, brassware, and cherished pieces from the family’s lineage.

At the entrance, a fixed granite seat anchored on a Sadarahalli base sets a grounded first impression. Beside it, a tulsi katte in Sadarahalli complements the ensemble with a touch of tradition. The laterite-clad backdrop beside the main door holds a mirror that reflects the greenery from the shoe unit, adding a refreshing visual lift to the otherwise warm material palette.

The foyer console maintains a light, contemporary feel with its asymmetrical lathe-turned legs, displaying select brass collectibles and a carved wooden Ganesha. In the living area, a wooden ceiling features suspended glass lights, while rafters extend down the wall and finish in carved wooden flowers—an understated nod to regional craftsmanship. A swing becomes the focal point here, visually linking the living room to the courtyard framed by two wooden columns and styled with layered antique pots and planters.

A guthu mané-inspired opening connects the kitchen to the living room, creating a familiar yet modern dialogue between the spaces. The kitchen is kept bright with light finishes and a Vaastu-mandated pop of blue on a stained wooden shelf. To bring more natural light into this zone, the storeroom opens into the kitchen, borrowing daylight from the backyard.

The dining and puja areas are compact, intentional spaces designed for quiet rituals and everyday use. The puja sits on a low stone plinth that aligns with the courtyard’s column bases. A custom dining table, paired with chairs that tuck in completely, keeps the layout visually clean. A laterite-clad wall behind the dining area adds warmth and texture.

On the first floor, the bar is integrated into a multifunctional partition that also serves the adjacent gym area. Its lower section houses bottles, glasses, and a mini-fridge alongside gym storage, while the upper section features an Udupi-inspired CNC-cut pattern that adds visual interest without overwhelming the space. The master bedroom follows a soft yellow-beige palette, while the daughter’s room adopts a calm powder blue, inspired by the muted tones of coastal homes. A former balcony transforms into a compact work-from-home corner that opens into a lounge.

‘Kalaśa’ stands as a thoughtful blend of memory and modern living, an urban Bengaluru home infused with the textures, sensibilities, and cultural echoes of Udupi.
