Khayaal is located in Areekode, Kerala and has been built for a young family. Given their high-pressure professional lives, they sought a residence that would serve as a vibrant, colourful retreat-an oasis that rejuvenates both body and mind. The design of Khayaal emerged as a response to the site's inherent challenges, requiring an adaptive and context-driven approach. One of the primary difficulties was the sloped terrain, which necessitated a thoughtful spatial configuration. Rather than imposing a rigid structure onto the landscape, we embraced the natural contours by splitting the ground floor into two levels. This strategic intervention allowed us to maintain a seamless spatial flow while ensuring minimal site disruption, ultimately enhancing the interaction between built and un-built spaces.

The site had a natural slope, which required strategic planning for optimal space utilization. To address this, we designed the ground floor at two levels, seamlessly integrating the structure with the terrain while ensuring functional zoning and accessibility.

The house features one master bedroom with a sliding door opening towards lush green space, a guest room, kids bedroom, dining room, pantry kitchen, main kitchen, formal living room, family Living space, prayer room, and on the first floor, there is 2 bedroom and one with a walk-in wardrobe area, and a common space.

Stepping into the home you will find a living room lit up by sun all day long with a slit running like a stream of light. From the living room you enter into a linear space which is the next level of the ground floor featuring dining pantry kitchen and family living in a straight line. The space between dining and pantry kitchen opens to the green space. The dining and pantry kitchen areas flow seamlessly into one another creating an open airy feel.

At the heart of the second level, an open-to-sky courtyard becomes the soul of the home, a quiet, inward-looking space that serves as both a family retreat and a moment of spatial relief. A Terminalia tree anchors this volume, its branches reaching gently toward the sky, embodying both rootedness and release. This vertical connection from planted earth to open sky breathes life into the home, inviting light, air, and calm into the private realm of the family.

The stairway begins with a soft, curved entrance that gently guides the movement upward. At the landing, a full-height vertical glass wall opens up the space, offering a visual connection to the outside while allowing natural light to enter subtly. At the first-floor level, a corridor opens out, lined with a horizontal row of windows that adds a sense of openness and continuity. To the left, the bedroom, which opens to a private balcony overlooking trees, offering a peaceful connection to nature, the space is connected to a walk-in wardrobe, accessed through a sliding door that leads into a passage revealing a compact, thoughtfully arranged room lined with shelves. On the right, the guest bedroom is positioned in quiet symmetry, which opens to its own balcony facing the greenery, allowing natural light and fresh air to fill the space. A large circular opening, glazed and set into the left wall of the stairwell, adding a soft illumination to the home.

In Khayaal, architecture slows down. Light is introduced with intention, and spaces unfold rather than declare. Interiors are not defined by walls alone, but by transitions, and pauses. It is in these quiet shifts that Khayaal finds its rhythm not as a statement, but as a state of mind.

The design of Khayaal thoughtfully translates the client’s lifestyle and aspirations into a living experience. Recognizing their need for a peaceful retreat after long, demanding days as dental professionals and creatives, the home integrates expansive, lively spaces enriched with natural elements and greenery.

The color palette chosen throughout the home enhances the vibrancy of the live spaces, infusing energy without overwhelming the sense of calm. Every spatial decision from the openness of the layout to the placement of personalized niches is rooted in supporting both the couple's professional demands and their personal need for inspiration, relaxation, and creative expression.
