Light house is a residence set in the suburbs of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. We designed this house for a young couple who were busy entrepreneurs and their sons to create a beautiful house for them to grow together. Aptly named the lighthouse, the residence is punctured with light pockets that illuminate the house naturally and creates a beautiful play with light and texture.

The design language of the house comes from tradition and artistic taste meeting contemporary architecture, where we wanted to create a house that highlighted comfort, luxury and tradition. This is showcased through the house, with pockets of nostalgia and family referred to across the residence. Bespoke custom murals, a gentle palette with muted tones and specific detailing across to reflect the tastes and interests of the members of the household. We played with a limited material board of wood, glass and marble to create the mood for this residence and used custom artwork, sculptures and furniture to accentuate the spaces.

One of our favourite elements is the powder room designed for this residence. To make the powder room less conspicuous, we created a stunning mural that also serves as the entrance for the powder room. Paired with a marble inlay flooring in the foyer, this sets the tone for the experience in the residence as one enters. This residence is designed in layers, with each space inviting the user to further embark on a journey across the spaces that creates an encounter as one moves through the spaces.

Karthikeyan Padmanabhan, the principal architect and designer of Vishwakarma Design Studio plays with light and openings to naturally light and ventilate spaces as much as possible. One can see this principle reflected throughout the residence, with natural light creating a beautiful play with the material palette reflected in this residence. Another signature design language of Karthikeyan is the brick vaults and domes he includes in his design process. The common area on the first floor features a long brick vault that adds character and depth to the space.

At Vishwakarma, we work and explore a wide pallete of materials to create layered spaces that create meaningful narratives. Having a furniture and metal working platform here at Vishwakarma allows us to create bespoke and unique furniture that has a narrative towards the space and the clients we are creating for. We design, ideate and create and see our designs come through to execution. Seeing our projects through the different stages of architecture, space planning, construction, furniture and interior design and landscaping through is the niche we have in wholistically completing and being invested in our projects. We work primarily with handcrafted wooden furniture that is custom, unique and flexible to the users’ needs, making it truly one of a kind.

We worked with various artisans across India as well, with the landscape architect, Anand from Pondicherry and certain complementary pieces of furniture from artisans in Delhi. Anand’s landscape reflects the tone and style of the residence with a minimalistic landscape.

The Light house speaks for itself, basking in its warmth and exuding the same sentiment throughout the home and in its residents. A lovely space that becomes a home, meeting at a juncture of , love, family and tradition on a base of modern architecture.
