What does it take to design a cafe with space constraints without compromising on the aesthetics? At ‘Raahe’, crafted by Forearch Studios, myriad answers emerge to tackle this very question.

Cradled amidst Vibhuti Khand, Lucknow's bustling commercial district, the cafe exemplifies thoughtful spatial design, where every inch is maximised for comfort and visual delight.

Mikasha Sinha Pasricha, the lead designer shares, “Our clients, fresh faces in the restaurant business, desired an amplified sense of space within the cafe’s compact dimensions. Moreover, our canvas was an old brick structure that required meticulous priming and strengthening before the interior works commenced, so we ensured selection of robust materials for the skeletal frame.”

Aman Pasricha, the design partner adds, ”Low ceiling heights presented a challenge, limiting the vertical space. And so, ergonomic considerations were vital in addressing this issue.” She reveals their approach for the interiors, saying, “We assembled a blend of curvaceous and eccentric elements to cultivate an ambiance of minimalist softness with a touch of playful elegance.”

Upon entering, guests are greeted by an environment dressed in striking emerald green accents and smooth wooden finishes, intended to imbue the communal space with both vibrancy and inviting warmth. Handmade tiles with customised wavy textures adorn the barista counter and floor, lending expression to the space.

The chosen theme is further reinforced by 3D artworks, conceived by the designers themselves, which grace the foyer wall. Mirrors engulf the opposite wall, enhancing the perception of spaciousness. "For an optimal merchandise display, we installed a set of shelves next to the counter and converted the under-stair area into a purposeful alcove," notes Mikasha.

Ascending the staircase, the mezzanine floors unfold. The lower mezzanine floor presents a focal point in the form of the back wall, decorated with a trio of paintings. These abstract compositions offer whimsical reinterpretations of renowned portraits from the historical epoch, commanding attention with their unique charm and quirkiness. From roman arches outlining these art pieces to shouldered arches framing the whole floor, the language of gentle contours continues here. Above, bespoke printed wallpaper with a brush stroke texture beautifies the ceiling, emulating the artistic theme of the culinary space.

Aman states, ”To optimise seating capacity, we played with floor levels, creating an additional (upper) mezzanine level by transforming the existing staircase. As a result, it became the only cafe in the whole neighbourhood with three levels instead of two.”

The furniture, primarily upholstered in suede velvet, also boasts delicate bends. Fashioned with wooden frames and cane backs, they exude contemporary elegance. Their colour palette harmonises seamlessly with that of the curated paintings, creating a cohesive atmosphere. Elevating the ambiance are lighting fixtures with sinuous forms, procured from Emanate Lighting, while additional clerestory windows installed subsequently flood the space with ample natural light.

The designer pair expresses “Fostering an inviting space is intrinsic to our design philosophy, especially in public settings like a cafe, where comfort and enjoyment is paramount. We strived to manifest this ethos in Raahe by paying close attention to every detail.”

Their endeavour shines through successfully in the design of this epicurean joint, where space optimization takes centre stage while maintaining a captivating milieu for the patrons.
