“This house is an example of modernism-rethought, facilitating a feeling of coziness.” When they thought of modern, they envisioned flowing concrete walls, filleted junctions and rounded edges, teamed with vertical grooved patterns in wood. The entire house has it's own character and momentum with curved openings and sleek details. Thus came into being the ROUND EDGED HOUSE.

A case in point being the twin apartments, they had to designed for two siblings—identical spaces with two very different briefs. While the elder brother wanted a classical house, the younger sibling preferred a modern house. The latter home is the subject of this story. The other issue was the client’s initial rejection of panelled surfaces. “But once they saw the conceptual views, the change of heart was quite instantaneous. So taking modernism as the bedrock, and being distinctive too. A bespoke living environment infused with gentleness and timeless appeal was achieved.

Material Pallette was kept minimal with, concrete finish walls, oak wood and Botticino and Travertine stones. With the continuation of round forms, added vertical grooves pattern in panelling and walls too. To achieve the form finished structural effect in interiors, the pannelling was topped by concrete-finish Limocoat as this material selection did away with joinery details. Most of the furniture—barring the sofas and chairs—have been made in-house. Sourced bamboo chandeliers and pots locally.” The intentional use of sunlight as a primary "material" in the design. This abundant natural resource was ingeniously incorporated into the interior spaces, not solely through physical openings but also by strategically integrating greenery throughout the space.

The round forms are seen in walls, panelling, sliding doors, partitions, and furniture. The entire house has its own character and momentum with curved openings and sleek details. The undulating shoe cabinet in the entrance lobby—which seems to emerge from a cementitious wall and flow into a mirrored expanse—is another impactful rendition of the core concept. A pair of sliding panels in the living area, lattice-like with curved rectilinear cut-outs, is an interesting and fun articulation of the central theme.

The console in their foreground is rendered in stone. “They’re backed by a mirrored expanse, and as they move from one end to another, they create different visuals against the reflective backdrop thus creating volume and visual interest. Oak wood and mirrors—the latter add illusory volume to an already expansive space.
