The house was conceived to be a modern, urban space that would inherently become harmonious to living community and culture, yet have an identity of its own. An elegant, simple yet daunting piece that is sure to attract attention sits boldly in a perfectly rectangular 1500 sq. ft. plot with visibility from the roads in the north and east. The site is adjoining two build house in the other two directions.
The brief was to build a simple, functional and an aesthetically soothing house that suits a couple with a two daughters. Client was very clear of his requirement for a four bedroom house with living room, dining and a kitchen that should be spacious and clutter free.
The exterior is minimal and simple yet attracts the attention in the surrounding. The first floor is projected which holds the Dholpur stone screen, wraps around the house creating a very private appearance still maintaining visual connectivity between exteriors and interiors. Dholpur stone was selected where stone screen helps to create a stable thermal mass. The gap in screen varies depends on the privacy and light required.
Climate responsive façade and openings allow a lot of natural light and ventilation and clutter free interiors creating a contemplative calm. The open layout creates a sense of spaciousness in these small footprints of the house.
The ground floor has a parking area, a very cozy entry foyer; the main door opens into a spread out volume that includes defined spaces such as living, staircase, dining, kitchen and a bedroom. Passage on the first floor act as bridge and leads to private bedrooms on either side and interacts with the double height volumes of the staircase shaft in one side and dining area on other. Pooja area is demarcated with Amber and white chevron pattern in the floor and has an antique white finish backdrop. Second floor has a bedroom and semi covered outdoor terrace which can be commonly approached.
Despite of small plot size, the interior is artistically composed and remarkably spacious. A very cozy entry foyer is through Kota tile leads to the main door. The main door opens into a spread out volume that includes defined spaces such as living, staircase, dining, kitchen and a bedroom. A large expanse of yellow Jaisalmer stone is seen throughout the house with the warmth of teak wood furniture, micro concrete textures in few wall and bison ceiling. White marble along with Jaisalmer is used in chevron pattern connecting living, staircase and dining area breaking the monotony of the floor. The mood board of teak wood veneer finishing combined with saturated colors brought in through artworks and fabrics.

Tucked within a demarcated yet integrated space is the cozy living room, which acts as perfectly formal and informal both. It has a teal sectional and an artistic center table. In the living room distinctive bison and Amber floor keeps one riveted. The grey micro concrete texture wall acts as a backdrop for the TV along with minimally designed unit. Floating metal shelves was introduced between living and staircase area which act as a barrier from staircase yet gives the seamless visual connectivity. It also spares a cozy reading nook.
Staircase is crafted with exposed concrete and natural wood with a clean linear railing detail. White wall with groove detail backdrop of the staircase evokes a sense of simplicity and vastness. Staircase also act as a light well. Sciography of sunlight through skylight change seasonally in length and intensity making the interiors dramatic throughout the year.
Dining area lits by double height floor to ceiling opening and seems a balanced mixture of tradition and modern. It adorns the beautiful huge sized madhubani artwork, cane lamps hanging at multiple levels from double height ceiling and marble top dining. Adjoining Kitchen is kept functional and have the simple neutral color palate.
A Bedroom on the ground floor has a simple background of grey and white walls with white fluted textured furniture setting the stage of elegant and chic layers.

Master room on the first floor is minimal and functional. It is highlighted by the furnishings and artworks. The large external ‘L’ shaped opening in master room with the stone screen outside filters air and harsh sunlight as well as provides security and privacy. There is a nice play of sciography in the morning. Room is enhanced through simple upholstered back poster bed, Amber floor and bison ceiling. Cane detailing on side tables and wardrobes with locally sourced handles ties in the room with a look of comfort and serenity also adding a touch of tradition to the modern. Study table is beautifully crafted on site. The circular mirror with the dresser is another chic element in the room.
Daughter room on the first floor gives a feel of tranquil space. Fulfilling the requirement of more storage in the small footprint of the bedroom along with seating nook, study table and dresser, we dressed this space in neutrals and highlighting the headboard wall on the dusty blue tone. The full length mirror framed in wood flows into the groove detailed veneer panel bed back. The entire bed back felt very well put together with sage green quilted linen and artworks on the wall. The other side of the room serves functionally where we resorted to clean simple furniture, making the room feel lighter. Sitting by the window must be one of the most delightful cosiness anyone could ever experience and it also accommodate ample storage below. Slick Metal shelves merging with the wall sets ideal for displaying favorite reads and collectibles. Second floor has a bedroom and semi covered outdoor terrace which can be commonly approached.
Daughter room on the second floor offers warmth and cosiness. The micro concrete and vertical ribbed woodwork on the bed back draws one's attention to the bed. Metal cased with wooden faced drawer side tables accentuates the headboard. Wooden front faced drawer storage framed in Metal study table is cantilevered from the wall. The Large leaning mirror in the corner gives the space a continuity that makes it look spacious and seamless.
Terrace comprises of a long running length planter bed hence gets naturally partial shaded. Timeless classic checkerboard pattern of green and Amber draws one's attention. It is semi covered with pergola which evolves shadows across the span of the day creating visual play of sciography.
