Located in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Savaya is a 1,100-square-foot, three-bedroom apartment designed for a family of three with a deep-rooted connection to their Rajasthani heritage. Hailing from Bikaner, the clients wanted their home to reflect their love for Indian art, traditional crafts, textiles and the rich visual language of their cultural roots. The brief, however, was never to recreate a conventional traditional Indian home. Instead, the intent was to reinterpret that heritage through a contemporary lens, creating a space that felt rooted yet distinctly modern.

The design evolved around the idea of an Indian-modern home—one where heritage and contemporary sensibilities could coexist effortlessly. Traditional influences find expression through colour, patterns, materials, art and handcrafted details, while the forms and silhouettes remain clean, contemporary and understated. The result is a home that feels familiar and nostalgic without becoming overtly conventional.

Wooden textures infused with brass finishes and brass accessories bring warmth and a subtle sense of timelessness to the interiors. Rather than relying on a restrained neutral palette, the home embraces colour with confidence. Pops of orange, green and earthy wooden tones are layered throughout the spaces, creating moments of energy and visual interest. Indian-inspired prints and textiles further reinforce the connection to the clients’ cultural roots, adding depth, texture and personality to the home.

Art was an integral part of the design process rather than an afterthought. Art pieces, lighting fixtures and decorative elements were carefully selected to complement the overall narrative of the home. Each element contributes to a larger composition, allowing the apartment to feel collected, expressive and personal. The juxtaposition of contemporary shapes with Indian art forms and heritage-inspired details creates a visual dialogue between the old and the new.

One of the key challenges was the relatively compact scale of the rooms. The brief called for a bold aesthetic, yet the spaces needed to remain breathable, open and lively. This required a careful balance between colour, pattern, furniture and decorative elements. Instead of reducing the design language to accommodate the smaller footprint, the approach was to embrace its character while ensuring that every element had a sense of purpose. Proportion, visual weight and negative space were therefore as important as the decorative details themselves.

As both the interior designer and stylist, the process extended beyond designing the spaces to carefully curating how each room would ultimately feel and come together. The styling became an extension of the architecture and interiors, allowing art, textiles, objects and lighting to work cohesively with the furniture and material palette.

Savaya is ultimately a celebration of contemporary Indian living—an intimate home that draws strength from its cultural roots while looking firmly towards the present. It is a space where colour replaces restraint, craft meets contemporary form, and heritage is not preserved behind glass but reimagined as a living, evolving part of everyday life.
