Sowparnika is a private residence designed on a compact 30 ft x 46 ft west-facing plot in the heart of BTM Layout, Bangalore. Nestled in a dense and bustling urban setting, the home had to respond not just to space constraints but also to its energetic commercial surroundings. The clients came to us with a clear vision—they wanted a home deeply rooted in Indian culture, one that felt quietly grounded yet visually warm, without shouting for attention in its busy context.

With privacy as the top priority, our design takes an inward-looking approach, creating a peaceful sanctuary that shields itself from the street while opening up within. The house footprint is kept small and efficient, allowing us to layer spaces in a way that feels intimate yet expansive.

The brief called for a three-bedroom home, a convertible library-cum-home theatre, a lift for vertical circulation, and a terrace garden. From the very start, the home was imagined with a rustic yet refined aesthetic, guided by a thoughtful selection of natural materials and a deep respect for craftsmanship. The ground floor accommodates parking for two cars and includes a dedicated home theatre—a cozy, immersive space that doubles as a library.

The first floor hosts the heart of the home: living, dining, kitchen, and the pooja room. The pooja space sits beneath an angular skylight, bathing it in natural light through the day—quietly anchoring the home in spiritual grounding. The floors here are laid with leather-finish Kota stone, giving a rugged, earthy base, while the Jaisalmer Yellow stone in the living areas adds warmth and a sunlit glow. In the kitchen, a greenish-blue tone pairs with grey quartz countertops, creating a calm, harmonious palette that blends with the rest of the interiors.

A curvilinear floating staircase in wood winds its way up under a large skylight, acting as both a sculptural and spatial connector. Stone slab partitions and terracotta blocks enhance the rustic ambience while cleverly preserving space and light. The 50mm thick stone slabs used as partitions are not only space-efficient but incredibly low-maintenance.

The second floor houses two bedrooms, each with wardrobes featuring fabric-inlaid glass shutters—a detail that brings in texture and a soft Indian touch. The leather-finish Kota stone continues here, creating visual and material consistency.

The third floor is more private, with a spacious bedroom that features yellow-toned Kota stone flooring, black glass wardrobes, and a compact study with a glass writing board. This room opens out onto a terrace garden—a green escape in the urban skyline, offering moments of pause and connection to the outdoors.

The façade is quiet yet expressive, using yellow fireclay curved bricks and grey stone slabs to strike a balance between privacy and natural material expression. Inside, details like handwoven tussar silk for door panels, live-edge wood furniture, and traditional Indian rugs speak of warmth, memory, and materiality. The cots are custom-finished to match the soft hues of the fabrics, creating a seamless tactile experience throughout.

From the flow of light to the texture of materials underfoot, Sowparnika is a home that gently holds its inhabitants—offering stillness, strength, and cultural richness within a compact, urban footprint.
