Studio for little explorers is an innovative interior design project characterized by soft edges and gentle curves. The bare shell originally featured freestanding columns detached from the wall and numerous corners. The design philosophy centered on softening out edges to ensure safety of the children with curves thoughtfully adapted to suit the unique needs of the day care center.

The client’s brief called for a space that would encourage play curiosity and discovery, with emphasis on soft edges and bright colors. Curves were used throughout to evoke a sense of playfulness and intrigue. Each column was interpreted differently, and the central column was designed as a symbolic tree. A glass block wall was introduced to divide the areas into two environments’ while maintaining visual connectivity. Following the same language of curves and vibrant colors, the wall unified both areas into a cohesive and engaging learning environment.

The entrance of the daycare, located on the southwest side, welcomes visitors with an inviting glass block wall that serves as a central design element visually uniting both environments. The layout is designed to maximize natural light from the west through full height windows. Yellow flooring enhances the space, while the glass blocks take on golden hues reflecting sunlight beautifully throughout the day. On the northside, a long wall is painted in a gradient of yellow that subtly suggests the expansiveness and brightness of the interior. Towards the south a flush mounted drawing board is seamlessly integrated into the wall, maintaining a clean and cohesive look.

The central glass blocks wall curves gracefully around the central column which is envisioned as a symbolic tree. Set slightly apart from the column, the wall creates a playful loop, allowing children to run around and experience the column from all sides. Along the eastern side, the columns are designed to appear as though they are emerging from the wall – an intriguing form that also created a functional niche for storage between the wall and the column.

The yellow flooring curves gently from the two main environments into a classroom, creating a seamless visual transition. Designed to accommodate 8-10 children, this classroom serves as a third dedicated space for learning. The ceiling features an organic pattern. A column within the classroom is designed as a circular form painted in alternating stripes of white and yellow. Bathed in natural light from full-height windows on the west side, the classroom feels bright, warm and inviting.

The glass block wall was meticulously engineered, with a concealed framework of rods between each block to ensure stability and a seamless finish. Select blocks in a vibrant yellow were thoughtfully integrated into the wall casting a warm golden hue into the classroom. As daylight filters through, these colored blocks create a dynamic play of light and shadow, infusing the space with a sense of excitement, warmth and energy – turning the wall into both a functional partition and an ever-changing visual experience .

The clients brought in existing furniture and storage units salvaged from a previous site, which were thoughtfully adapted to suit the new environment. Redesigning these pieces to be child friendly-both in terms of accessibility and ease of use – required multiple mock-ups and on-site tests to refine proportions, heights, and finishes. The process balanced functional needs with the project’s aesthetic vision. All while ensuring the design remained within budget.

The design language draws inspiration from Scandinavian day care principles, where safety, abundant natural light, and warm, cheerful colors are thoughtfully combined to create spaces that feel both calm and stimulating. Bold, sweeping curves and generous round edges go beyond their functional role of ensuring safety to establish a strong visual identity. These sculptural forms bring fluidity, movement and a sense of play, making the interiors both child-friendly and architecturally distinctive.
