Restorative. Sensorial. Zen. These aren’t usually adjectives that come to mind for an office, much less the office of a developer. Yet, those were the main words that jumped out when they read the client brief. “The office had to reflect the ethos of the company and the vision was to create a sustainable, ‘zensorial’ space that was one with nature.”

The material palette was integral to achieving this vision - cement flooring, terrazzo, cork sheets, cane, local materials, textures and fabrics. Be it the reception table with its cane detailing anchored in place by a custom cane pendant, the cement tile flooring laid to define and demarcate spaces or the antique doors that lead to the meeting rooms. Breaking away from the conventional mould of what an office should be – they have attempted to showcase what an office can be.

This project is a departure from the design of a conventional office space. The approach to the design was holistic from the get go – in terms of the structure, space planning and choice of materials, everything went hand in hand and not as an overthought.

Terrazzo has been used as the tabletop and leg of the discussion tables. Terrazzo is made from recycled aggregates, making it an environment friendly material. The monochromatic colour and smooth finish of the terrazzo is accentuated by the wooden fluted leg. It is a subtle and minimal piece of furniture, but the beauty of it lies in the detailing of its shape, finish and texture.

Hand-made cement tiles have been used as the star flooring material of this office. These tiles add to the earthy feel of the space which is further accentuated by the envelope of green around the perimeter.

They gave a new home to this beautiful, carved wooden door that has become a statement piece of this project, adding an antique touch to the modern frameless glazed partitions. This is a proof that a well-made and well-designed product could outrun the lifetime of your building and form a timeless piece. The furniture pieces are an amalgamation of modern and traditional elements. The modern approach is evident through the minimalistic forms and shapes of the units with abstracted ornamentation. The selection of materials has a more traditional approach, wherein natural and rustic materials like wood, cane and terrazzo have been used. A balance in terms of the textures of the finishes is achieved through contrasting elements like the smooth terrazzo top with
the textured cane or fluted wooden bases.

This contrast is also witnessed in the crowning glory of the reception table and the customized cane pendant light. The simple curved profile of the light breaks the monotony of the otherwise linear shapes of the space and the ornamentation is achieved with the cane weave in the body of the light. Further emphasizing the concept of modern meets traditional, are the two antique doors which have been sourced, upcycled and retrofitted perfectly into the contemporary glazed facade of the discussion rooms.
